“Do not give him anything after nine.”

“Conrad doesn’t want trouble during transport.”

I closed my eyes.

My mother.

Clear.

Direct.

Alive inside my phone.

Then:

“Did Darius call?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“He cannot know until tomorrow.”

“Why tomorrow?”

Vanessa asked.

The agent looked at her sharply.

That was riskier than planned.

My mother answered:

“Because by tomorrow his brother will no longer be his problem.”

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Dana whispered:

“Well.”

Agent Foster looked toward her partner.

“We need warrants.”

I stood.

“What does ‘no longer be his problem’ mean?”

“No speculation.”

I hated her instantly for being right.

“Conrad is coming at eleven.”

“We know.”

“You’re letting him?”

“We’re preparing.”

“Preparing what?”

“Darius.”

Dana caught my shoulder.

“Let them.”

I looked at Vanessa.

She was still holding the dead phone.

My marriage was sitting somewhere behind her eyes.

I could not reach it.

Not then.

At 10:47 p.m., our house looked empty.

Lily remained with Dana’s husband.

Michael was at the hospital with an agent.

Vanessa and I were upstairs in a guest bedroom.

Federal agents occupied positions I was not told about.

The hidden room was empty.

Its door closed.

A blanket beneath it created the illusion someone remained inside.

At 10:58, headlights entered the rear drive.

A black SUV.

Then another.

Conrad Vale stepped out.

I watched through a narrow camera feed Agent Foster allowed us to see.

Vale was sixty.

Tall.

Silver-haired.

Former investigator.

He wore a dark suit without tie.

Two men accompanied him.

No uniforms.

They entered through a service door using a code.

Our code.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you give him that?”

“No.”

Of course.

My mother had.

Vale went upstairs.

He stopped at hidden panel.

Knocked twice.

“Michael.”

Silence.

“Time to go.”

He opened the panel.

The room was empty.

Vale froze.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes.”

Pause.

“He’s gone.”

Another pause.

His face changed.

“I’m sure.”

Pause.

“No, Vanessa’s not here.”

He looked down the hallway.

Then:

“Darius?”

I could not hear my mother, but I heard Vale’s answer.

“No.”

Then federal agents entered.

“FBI. Hands where we can see them.”

There was no gunfight.

No chase.

Vale simply stared.

Then slowly raised both hands.

His companions did the same.

The most surprising thing about real power collapsing is how quiet it can be.

Vale was detained.

A search of the SUVs uncovered medical restraints, sedatives, forged transport documents, and a passport in Michael’s name with a different photograph.
