“Two days later your mother came here.”

“While I was at work?”

“Yes.”

“She walked straight upstairs.”

“She already knew.”

“What did she do?”

Vanessa stared at her hands.

“She opened the door.”

“You gave her key?”

“No.”

“She had one.”

My skin chilled.

The house suddenly did not feel mine.

“What did she say?”

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“She looked at Michael and said, ‘You always were harder to bury than your brother.’”

I looked at Michael.

He nodded.

“Exact words.”

My mouth went dry.

“What did she mean, my brother?”

Michael shook his head.

“No idea.”

Could have meant metaphorically.

Could have meant me professionally.

We did not know.

Not then.

Vanessa continued.

“Your mother told me Michael was unstable.”

“That he had stolen company records.”

“That federal investigators were looking for him.”

“That if anyone learned I had hidden him, I could lose Lily.”

I almost laughed.

“You believed her?”

“At first? Partly.”

“You knew he was injured.”

“I knew.”

“You knew Mom lied about him being dead.”

“I knew.”

“Still.”

“She showed me documents.”

“What documents?”

“An arrest warrant.”

Michael said:

“Fake.”

“We learned later.”

Vanessa wiped tears angrily.

“She showed me a draft federal indictment with your name on it too.”

I stared.

“Mine?”

“She said if Michael surfaced, the financial investigation would become public.”

“She said the company would collapse.”

“She said you would be charged because your signatures were on the transfers.”

Michael looked at me.

“That part was plausible.”

I remembered every quarterly packet I had signed without reading line by line.

Trust.

A dangerous word.

Vanessa continued.

“She said she could make it disappear if Michael stayed hidden until she recovered the missing files.”

“And you locked the door.”

Her lips trembled.

“Not immediately.”

Michael spoke.

“For the first three weeks I could leave.”

“You left this room?”

“At night.”

“Sometimes downstairs.”

“You were in my house?”

“Yes.”

“While I slept?”

“Yes.”

I stood again.

I could not stay seated.

“Jesus Christ.”

“I’m sorry.”

Michael looked genuinely ashamed.

I turned to Vanessa.

“When did you lock him?”

She answered:

“The night your mother threatened Lily.”

Everything stopped.

“What did she say?”

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“She sent me a photograph of Lily outside school.”

My hands curled.

“What photograph?”

“Taken from across the street.”

“She said accidents happen when families stop cooperating.”

I could hear blood in my ears.

Michael said:

“That’s when I told Vanessa to lock me in.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“I told her.”

“Why?”

“Because Vale was watching the house.”

“Because if I walked out and Mom saw, Lily became leverage.”

“You agreed?”

“For a while.”

Vanessa whispered:

“Then Michael changed his mind.”
