"Then she asked whether she had to put it away before I came home."

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

I tried to imagine living with that kind of uncertainty at eight years old.

A child should be worrying about spelling tests, missing crayons, and whether her friends will remember her birthday.

My granddaughter had been worrying about which version of herself she was allowed to show to different adults.

And the worst part was that she had begun to believe those rules were normal.

The following afternoon, Lily came to my house wearing the green coat with yellow stars.

I saw it before she even reached the porch.

The bright green fabric looked beautiful against her blonde hair, and the little embroidered stars seemed to catch the afternoon light. She wore comfortable jeans, white sneakers, and a pink scarf tucked beneath the collar.

Daniel walked beside her carrying a small overnight bag.

I opened the door.

Lily stopped.

For a moment, she looked uncertain.

Then I smiled.

"Well, look at that coat."

Her fingers tightened around the edges.

"Do you like it?"

I knelt in front of her.

"I love it."

She looked toward Daniel.

He smiled.

"See?"

Lily's face slowly brightened.

Then she stepped forward and hugged me.

I held her carefully.

"You look wonderful, sweetheart."

She whispered, "Thank you."

I looked toward Daniel.

He was watching us with tears in his eyes.

I understood.

He wasn't simply seeing his daughter wear a new coat.

He was seeing her ask a question she should never have needed to ask.

And he was watching her receive an answer without fear.

Daniel stayed for coffee while Lily went into the living room to play.

I had arranged a small table with drawing supplies, books, and a basket of toys she had enjoyed when she was younger. I hadn't changed the room since her last visit, but something about having her there without Vanessa's constant supervision felt unfamiliar.

Lily seemed uncertain at first.

She kept asking whether she could use certain things.

"Can I have the blue pencil?"

"Of course."

"Can I sit on the rug?"

"Yes."

"Can I take my coat off?"

I smiled.

"Whenever you're comfortable."

After the fourth question, I felt an ache in my chest.

But I didn't draw attention to it.

I simply answered.
