She coordinated school pickups, appointments, meals, and visits. Whenever I wanted to see Lily, she asked me to contact her rather than Daniel.

"It's easier this way," she explained. "Daniel's schedule changes so often."

At first, it made sense.

Vanessa was available.

Daniel was busy.

And I didn't want to create unnecessary conflict by insisting on doing things differently.

Gradually, though, I stopped speaking to Daniel directly.

If I wanted to bring Lily a birthday present, I called Vanessa.

If I wanted to attend a school event, Vanessa sent the details.

If I asked how my granddaughter was doing, Vanessa answered.

I didn't notice the separation happening.

Not until it had already become normal.

The first strange incident involved Lily's shoes.

I visited one Saturday afternoon and noticed that her sneakers were badly worn. The fabric had separated slightly near one toe, and the laces were tied so tightly that they looked uncomfortable.

I asked whether she needed new ones.

Vanessa sighed.

"I've been telling Daniel that for weeks."

I looked up.

"Has he been too busy?"

"He's wonderful with Lily, but he doesn't always notice practical things."

I nodded.

Men sometimes overlooked details of children's clothing.

Daniel had never been particularly interested in shopping, and I knew Claire had handled most of Lily's wardrobe when she was alive.

Still, something bothered me.

"Could you pick up a pair?" I asked.

Vanessa gave a tired smile.

"I've been covering so many little expenses lately. I don't want to keep spending without discussing it with him."

The answer sounded reasonable.

I offered to buy the shoes.

Vanessa declined at first, saying she didn't want me to feel obligated.

Eventually, she agreed.

I took Lily shopping the following week.

She chose white sneakers with tiny silver stars.

I bought two pairs of socks to match.

When I brought her home, Vanessa thanked me warmly.

"You're such a wonderful grandmother."

I left feeling useful.

I also left feeling disappointed in Daniel.

That was how it began.

Not with one enormous lie.

With a series of small conversations that encouraged me to reach the wrong conclusion myself.

A month later, Lily was wearing an old sweater during one of my visits.

The sleeves were too short, and the fabric had begun pilling around the cuffs.

Vanessa shook her head when she noticed me looking.
