But understanding the fear didn't excuse what she had done.

I thought of Lily standing in the doorway in that oversized blue dress.

I thought of the little girl asking whether her father would leave if the adults fought.

And I thought of Claire's unopened birthday letter.

I looked directly at Vanessa.

"Your feelings were real. But you made an eight-year-old responsible for them."

She began crying.

I continued.

"She thought she had to look neglected to prove she loved her mother. She thought being happy would hurt me. She thought telling her father the truth might make him leave."

Vanessa wiped her face.

"I never wanted to hurt her."

Daniel looked at her.

"But you did."

She lowered her eyes.

He continued.

"And when she finally tried to show Margaret her dress, you threw it on the floor and humiliated her."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel sat back.

"I can't rebuild trust with someone who won't fully acknowledge what happened."

She looked toward him.

"What does that mean?"

He took a breath.

"It means we need to separate while I decide what is right for Lily and for me."

Vanessa began crying harder.

I felt no satisfaction.

I had never wanted another marriage to fall apart.

I had never wanted Lily to experience another painful change in her family.

But I also knew that keeping a household together was not the same as making it safe.

Daniel continued.

"I'm speaking with a counselor and getting legal advice. Lily's well-being comes first. I'm not going to ask her to make this decision for us."

Vanessa nodded weakly.

Then she looked at me.

"Margaret, I'm sorry."

I considered my answer.

For a long moment, I said nothing.

Then I replied, "I hope you understand why what you did was wrong."

Her eyes filled.

"I do."

I nodded.

"But the apology that matters most isn't mine."

She looked down.

I continued.

"One day, if the professionals supporting Lily believe it's appropriate and Lily wants to hear it, you may have the chance to apologize to her. Not to ask for forgiveness. Not to explain why she should understand you. Just to acknowledge what you did."

Vanessa nodded through tears.

I stood.

Daniel rose beside me.

We left the cafΓ© together.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
