The lieutenant looked almost physically struck.

“That call isn't on dispatch.”

“No.”

“What did he say?”

The officer swallowed.

“He said the suspicious female might be involved in something bigger.”

“What bigger?”

“He didn't say.”

“Exact words.”

The patrol officer looked toward the federal agent.

Then back to his lieutenant.

“He said, ‘Don't let the woman in white walk away before you know who she is.’”

The Black federal agent felt every instinct sharpen.

The lieutenant asked:

“Why would he call you directly?”

“He said he recognized the description from another bulletin.”

“What bulletin?”

“I don't know.”

The second officer finally spoke.

“There wasn't one.”

Everyone turned.

The younger officer looked frightened but continued.

“I checked the mobile terminal on the way here.”

“There was no matching bulletin.”

The lead officer stared at him.

“You didn't tell me that.”

“I did.”

“No.”

“I said I couldn't find anything.”

“You said the system might not have updated.”

“Because you told me to stop looking.”

The lieutenant’s face hardened.

The federal agent’s focus shifted entirely.

The arrest was no longer merely an operational disaster.

It might be evidence.

She asked the lead officer:

“What time did your sergeant call?”

He pulled out his department phone.

“Three fourteen.”

The suspicious-person call entered dispatch at three sixteen.

The federal agent looked toward the lieutenant.

The lieutenant understood immediately.

The sergeant warned the patrol officer about the woman before the anonymous caller officially reported her.

Two minutes.

That changed everything.

The lead officer stared at the phone as though it had become dangerous in his hand.

“I didn't know.”

The federal agent answered:

“No.”

“You didn't.”

She glanced toward his body camera.

“But somebody knew exactly how you'd react.”

That sentence hurt him.

He looked toward her.

“What does that mean?”

She did not soften it.

“It means somebody may have counted on you seeing a Black woman in casual clothes and assuming the badge story was a lie.”

His face reddened.

“That’s not why—”

“Not now.”

She turned toward the lieutenant.

“Your sergeant cannot know we're looking at him.”

The lieutenant took a breath.

“If he made that call—”

“We prove why.”

The lead officer stepped forward.

“You think he set me up?”

The agent looked at him.

“I think somebody gave you information before dispatch had it.”

“That somebody knew where I was.”

“And instead of asking why your sergeant knew about an anonymous call before dispatch did, you did exactly what he expected.”

The officer looked away.

There was no satisfying response.

The federal agent entered the unmarked SUV.

The lieutenant leaned toward the open door.

“What about the house?”

The agent checked the surveillance tablet.

“Witness hasn't signaled abort.”
