“This is Marcus Reed, Silver Pines, 114 Hawthorne Cove.”

“Yes, sir. We have officers responding to a disturbance there.”

“I’m the homeowner.”

Pause.

“Okay.”

“The woman who called is inside my fenced backyard.”

“Are you separated?”

“Yes.”

“She entered without permission?”

“Yes.”

“Any weapons?”

“No.”

“Anyone injured?”

“No.”

“I have camera footage showing her climbing the fence and grabbing me after I got out of the pool.”

“Can you preserve it?”

“Yes.”

“Can you send through secure link?”

A text arrived.

Marcus uploaded the clips.

Vanessa watched him.

“What are you doing?”

Marcus ignored her.

Dispatch said:

“Received.”

He looked at Vanessa.

“Nothing.”

Her face tightened.

The first patrol car stopped out front.

Then another.

Doors shut.

Voices.

The side gate rattled.

Marcus walked toward it.

“Don't.”

Vanessa's voice suddenly sounded frightened again.

Marcus stopped.

The officer outside called:

“Police. Homeowner?”

Marcus answered:

“Marcus Reed. Gate is locked from inside. I’m opening it.”

He walked slowly.

Unlocked.

Opened.

Two officers entered.

The first, Sergeant Caleb Morgan, white, early forties, calm face, body camera active.

The second, Officer Renee Jackson, Black woman, early thirties.

Both scanned.

Marcus.

Wet.

Orange swim trunks.

Barefoot.

Vanessa.

Hot-pink swimsuit.

Floral cover-up.

Holding her upper arm.

Pool.

Fence.

No obvious weapons.

Morgan said:

“Everybody stay where you are.”

Marcus stopped.

Vanessa moved toward him.

“Officer.”

Morgan raised one hand.

“Stay there.”

She stopped.

“My name is Vanessa Whitmore. I am president of the HOA.”

Morgan nodded.

“We'll get identities.”

She pointed toward Marcus.

“He became aggressive during an authorized compliance inspection.”

Marcus said nothing.

Morgan looked toward him.

“Sir, your name?”

“Marcus Reed.”

“Homeowner?”

“Yes.”

“You live here?”

“Yes.”

“Anybody else home?”

“No.”

“Any weapons on you?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

Jackson moved slightly toward Marcus.

Morgan remained centered.

Vanessa continued.

“I attempted to inspect a serious pool-safety violation.”

Morgan said:

“One at a time.”

“He physically confronted me.”

Morgan looked at her arm.

“Were you injured?”

“He grabbed me.”

Marcus stared.

Vanessa continued.

“He pulled my arm and threatened me.”

Marcus felt anger rise.

He forced it down.

Morgan asked:

“Did you enter the backyard?”

“Yes.”
