“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before you came through the gate.”

Jackson touched her shoulder radio.

“Dispatch, confirm video associated with Reed call.”

Static.

Then:

“Confirmed. Secure upload received.”

Jackson looked toward Morgan.

“Sergeant.”

He walked over.

She spoke quietly.

Morgan took out department phone.

A dispatch link had apparently been attached.

He opened.

Watched.

Vanessa continued talking from across the patio.

“I want him removed from the pool area until the inspection—”

Morgan raised one hand without looking up.

“Ma’am, stop talking for a moment.”

She stopped.

He watched.

Fence clip.

Then pool clip.

Marcus could see his own body on the small screen.

Surfacing.

Standing.

Vanessa approaching.

Her hand taking his arm.

Marcus pulling free.

Her reaching again.

Then siren.

Her retreat.

Hand to arm.

Expression changing.

Morgan replayed.

Officer Jackson watched over his shoulder.

Vanessa's face had gone pale.

“What exactly are you watching?”

Morgan continued.

She stepped forward.

Jackson raised one hand.

“Stay where you are.”

Vanessa stopped.

“I want to see the footage.”

“You'll have access through proper process if necessary.”

“This is my incident.”

“No.”

Jackson's voice remained calm.

“This is an investigation.”

Morgan finished.

Then looked up.

He did not appear angry.

That was worse.

“Ms. Whitmore.”

“Yes.”

“You told me you didn't grab him.”

“I said contact may have occurred.”

Morgan held up the phone.

“The video shows you grabbing his forearm.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“That was after he blocked me.”

“You also climbed the fence.”

“I had authority.”

“We'll discuss that.”

“He was refusing inspection.”

Morgan's tone changed slightly.

“Ma’am.”

She stopped.

“The camera also recorded you telling him to stay away after the siren became audible while he was already several feet away.”

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Morgan continued.

“Dispatch received this before we arrived.”

There it was.

The plot twist Vanessa had not anticipated.

She had expected the officers to choose between two stories.

They had arrived with the story already preserved.

Her expression collapsed.

Not entirely.

But enough.

“You don't understand the context.”

Morgan answered:

“Then explain the context accurately.”

Silence.

Marcus watched.

Vanessa looked at him.

Then the officers.

“My role requires me to enforce community safety.”

Morgan asked:

“Does your role authorize climbing locked residential fences?”

“The HOA has inspection authority.”

“Show me.”

“I don't have governing documents with me.”

“You climbed a six-foot fence without the document you say gives you authority?”

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Residents were notified.”

Marcus finally spoke.

“The rule isn't adopted.”

Morgan looked at him.

“What rule?”

Vanessa immediately said:

“That is irrelevant to the trespass question.”

Morgan stared.
