I crossed it out.

Then wrote:

Passenger verbally demeaned another passenger based on perceived status and race. Physical contact occurred. Crew faced pressure involving high-value account.

I stopped.

It was a more accurate summary.

But even that didn't capture what troubled me.

The problem wasn't that Victoria made a mistake about who owned the company.

It was that she felt entitled to speak cruelly to someone she assumed had no influence.

And our employees had been placed in a position where enforcing ordinary rules felt dangerous.

I wrote another sentence.

Investigate whether customer retention practices undermine employee authority and passenger dignity.

Then I closed the notebook.

For a while, I simply watched the clouds.

The cabin was beautiful.

Our aircraft were maintained to demanding standards.

The seats were comfortable.

The service was attentive.

The pilots were highly trained.

And yet, something essential had gone wrong long before takeoff.

Luxury wasn't the same as excellence.

A company could own beautiful airplanes and still fail the people who trusted it.

I knew that.

I had built Meridian Crown around that principle.

But somewhere during our expansion, the lesson had become a slogan rather than an operating standard.

About forty minutes into the flight, the older gentleman seated across the aisle leaned toward me.

He was sixty-eight, with silver hair, a navy sweater, and a thoughtful expression.

"Mr. Cole?"

I turned.

"Yes?"

He smiled.

"My name is Richard Bennett."

I shook his hand.

"Nice to meet you."

He hesitated.

"I wanted to say something about what happened."

I nodded.

"All right."

Richard glanced toward the rear of the cabin.

Then back at me.

"I've flown with your company for nearly four years."

"Thank you."

He smiled faintly.

"Usually it's excellent."

"I'm glad."

Then his expression became serious.

"But I've seen that woman behave that way before."

I felt my attention sharpen.

"Victoria?"

He nodded.

"Twice."

I waited.

He continued.

"Once in Aspen, she demanded that a young attendant be removed because she didn't like the way the girl spoke."

I frowned.

"What happened?"

"The attendant disappeared for the rest of the flight."

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"I assumed a manager had reassigned her."

I nodded.

He continued.

"Another time, Victoria told a man he was sitting in the wrong part of the cabin. Turned out he was a paying passenger."

I stared.

"What did the crew do?"

Richard looked down.

"They moved him."
