“Ava…”

She raised one hand.

“Please.”

He stopped.

Ava looked at Elise.

“You were about to have security remove me.”

Elise’s confidence weakened slightly.

“Because you are not authorized for that aircraft.”

Daniel said quietly:

“She is.”

Elise turned.

“What?”

“She’s on the manifest.”

Ava watched.

Elise’s face changed.

Not enough yet.

She looked at Daniel.

“Then there’s some mistake.”

“No.”

“Maybe she was added late.”

“No.”

“She told me no one was meeting her.”

“Because no one needs to.”

Elise’s eyes moved back toward Ava.

Then Daniel.

Confusion.

Fear approaching.

Still not there.

Daniel inhaled.

“Elise.”

“Yes?”

“You know Sterling Crest Aviation?”

“Of course.”

“You know who owns it?”

Silence.

The older security guard looked down.

He knew now.

Captain Harris descended two more steps.

The ground worker froze.

Daniel continued.

“Ava Coleman is the chief executive officer and controlling owner.”

Elise’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Ava held her gaze.

Daniel added, because apparently the universe had decided subtlety was no longer required:

“And N941SC is her aircraft.”

Silence.

Real silence.

Even the sounds of ground equipment seemed suddenly farther away.

Elise’s face drained.

She looked at Ava’s white dress.

The coat.

The bag.

Passport wallet.

Then finally her face.

As though rearranging everything she had seen.

“Ms…”

Her voice failed.

Ava waited.

“Ms. Coleman.”

There it was.

The transformation.

Ma’am had been dismissive.

Ms. Coleman came wrapped in fear.

Ava hated it.

Not because she wanted disrespect.

Because her name should not have been the thing that created basic professionalism.

Elise swallowed.

“I…”

Ava said nothing.

“I didn’t realize.”

Ava’s expression did not change.

Daniel looked furious.

Theodore looked uncomfortable.

Captain Harris had reached the bottom of the stairs.

Ava finally spoke.

“No.”

Elise blinked.

“No?”

“You didn’t.”

She paused.

“That is the problem.”

Elise’s eyes filled with panic.

“I apologize.”

Ava looked toward Theodore.

“Was my ramp pass valid?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Did I comply when asked for identification?”

“Yes.”

“Did I threaten anyone?”

“No.”

“Did I try to bypass security?”

“No.”

Elise interrupted:

“I misunderstood the situation.”

Ava looked at her.

“You refused to check.”

Silence.

“That isn’t misunderstanding.”

Elise’s mouth tightened.

Ava continued.

“I offered you my passport.”

No answer.

“I asked you to verify the manifest.”

No answer.

“I asked you to call operations.”

No answer.

“I asked you to speak with the crew.”

“I was trying to protect the aircraft.”
