Ava nodded.

“From what?”

Elise froze.

Daniel looked sharply toward her.

Ava repeated:

“From what?”

The question was simple.

That made it worse.

Elise looked down.

Ava waited.

No answer.

“You said I dressed like someone looking for photographs.”

Elise’s cheeks reddened.

“You said I did not belong here.”

Silence.

“You called security without checking one record.”

Ava stepped slightly closer.

“And now that you know my title, you are apologizing.”

Elise’s eyes lifted.

Ava’s voice remained calm.

“That tells me you know how to treat someone with power.”

The tarmac seemed colder now.

“I need to know why you didn’t think someone without it deserved the same process.”

Nobody spoke.

Ava looked toward Daniel.

“We’re not resolving this beside the airplane.”

He nodded.

“Agreed.”

She turned to Theodore.

“You did the right thing by checking the credential.”

His expression changed.

“Thank you.”

“You also questioned an instruction that didn’t make sense.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Keep doing that.”

Elise looked toward him.

Ava saw it.

The irritation.

Even now.

Interesting.

Ava looked back at Daniel.

“Delay us thirty minutes.”

Captain Harris nodded.

“Not a problem.”

Elise said quickly:

“Ms. Coleman, if I could explain privately—”

Ava stopped.

“We will speak privately.”

Relief flashed across Elise’s face.

Too soon.

“With your manager and with Meridian’s general manager present.”

The relief disappeared.

Ava picked up her handbag.

Then looked toward the black jet.

She had spent most of her adult life defending a principle she had learned from her father:

Ownership was not a crown.

It was a responsibility.

Tonight that responsibility had followed her onto the tarmac.

She turned back toward the terminal.

“Let’s go inside.”

The conference room was designed for people negotiating aircraft purchases.

Long walnut table.

Leather chairs.

Large screen.

Water bottles aligned perfectly.

Ava sat at one end.

Daniel beside her.

Across from them sat Elise.

Meridian’s general manager arrived twelve minutes later.

His name was Robert Lang.

Early fifties.

He entered pale and already apologizing.

“Ava, I cannot tell you how—”

She raised a hand.

“Please don’t start with apology.”

He stopped.

“I want facts.”

Robert sat.

“Of course.”

Ava looked at Elise.

“Start from when I walked outside.”

Elise’s hands were clasped tightly.

She repeated events.

Almost accurately.

Then:

“I believed Ms. Coleman was approaching the aircraft without authorization.”

Ava said:

“Why?”

Elise hesitated.

“The aircraft has a highly restricted passenger profile.”

“What does that mean?”

“Executive use.”

“Meaning?”

“Senior Sterling Crest leadership.”

Ava waited.

“And?”

Elise looked uncomfortable.

“You didn’t identify yourself as company leadership.”

“I gave you my name.”

“Yes.”

“Do you know the senior leadership list?”

“No.”

“So that wasn’t the reason.”

Elise’s cheeks flushed.

Robert shifted.

Ava ignored him.

“What specifically caused you to believe I was unauthorized?”

Elise looked toward Daniel.
