“How do we know?”

“Maybe we don’t.”

They sat in silence.

Sophia went to Denver for interviews anyway.

She stayed five days.

Jake did not call excessively.

Avery did.

Sophia returned.

Jake met at café.

She looked exhausted.

“What happened?”

“I turned it down.”

Jake’s heart leapt.

He kept face neutral.

“Why?”

Sophia smiled.

“Good.”

“What?”

“You didn’t smile.”

“I smiled internally.”

“I saw eyebrow.”

Jake laughed.

“Tell me.”

She took breath.

“I wanted role.”

“Not life attached.”

“They offered four days office, two weeks travel per month.”

“I realized I was trying to negotiate it into a job I already have here.”

“So I said no.”

Jake searched.

“Because of me?”

“Partly.”

“That is allowed.”

He looked surprised.

Sophia continued.

“You matter.”

“Avery matters.”

“The lodge matters.”

“Having dinner where I live matters.”

“Not spending half my life airport matters.”

“Choosing relationship is not automatically losing independence.”

“Independence is choosing knowingly.”

Jake’s eyes filled.

Sophia smiled.

“I accepted consulting contract instead.”

“One week Denver every six.”

“I keep lodge.”

“I keep life.”

Jake reached across table.

“And me?”

Sophia squeezed hand.

“Unfortunately.”

Then winter returned.

The storm that became part of family story began on a Wednesday in January.

School district dismissed early.

Forecast underestimated speed.

By two, snow fell almost horizontally.

At 2:36, Jake received a call from school.

Avery’s bus had developed mechanical failure seven miles north on Pine Crest Road.

Driver had pulled safely into turnout.

Twenty-one children.

Heat working intermittently.

County rescue responding.

Jake was already in truck before call ended.

Sophia called as he started engine.

“Maya said bus.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Pine Crest.”

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then:

“Excuse me?”

“Road bad.”

“I have four-wheel drive.”

“So do I.”

“You’re mechanic.”

“I’m closer.”

Jake exhaled.

“Sophia.”

She softened.

“I’m not following you into danger.”

“I’m taking lodge shuttle with chains.”

“We have blankets.”

“Hot drinks.”

“First-aid.”

“County emergency coordinator already called because lodge is nearest heated building.”

Jake stopped.

She was not playing hero.

She was part of response.

“Okay.”

“I’ll meet.”

Pine Crest Road was terrible.
