Jake reached bus at same time as county deputy and plow.

The bus alternator had failed, draining battery and reducing heater circulation.

Children were bundled.

Cold but safe.

Avery saw Jake through window.

Her face collapsed with relief.

Jake climbed aboard.

“Everyone okay?”

Driver nodded.

“Getting colder.”

Jake inspected.

Repair roadside would take too long.

County decided transfer kids to Lauron Lodge shuttle and deputy vehicles, then wait out worst storm.

Sophia arrived ten minutes later.

Avery ran toward her before Jake.

That surprised everyone.

Sophia wrapped blanket around her.

Avery cried.

Not loud.

Same way children often wait until safety to break.

Sophia held her.

Jake looked away because his own eyes were full.

At lodge, staff turned ballroom into shelter.

Hot chocolate.

Soup.

Parents arrived gradually as roads cleared.

Jake repaired bus next morning after plow access.

Nothing catastrophic happened.

No child hurt.

No one nearly died.

But something changed.

That night, Avery could not sleep.

She found Sophia in kitchen.

Jake was upstairs helping maintenance with frozen pipe.

Avery sat at table.

Sophia gave her tea.

“I thought Dad was going to get stuck.”

“He didn’t.”

“I know.”

“I hate snow now.”

Sophia smiled sadly.

“Temporary.”

Avery stared.

Then:

“Are you going to leave?”

Sophia knew what she meant.

Not tonight.

Someday.

She sat across.

“I don’t know what every future year looks like.”

Avery’s eyes filled.

Sophia continued:

“But I’m not planning to disappear.”

“People always say that.”

That hurt.

Sophia nodded.

“You’re right.”

“So I won’t ask you to trust promise forever.”

“I can promise something smaller.”

“What?”

“If anything changes between your dad and me, you won’t wake up and find me gone.”

“I’ll talk to you.”

“You matter separately.”

Avery looked.

“Even if you break up?”

Sophia swallowed.

“Yes.”

“That would hurt.”

“But I wouldn’t pretend you stopped existing.”

Avery cried again.

Sophia moved around table.

“Can I hug?”

Avery nodded.

Sophia held.

Jake stood unseen in doorway for a few seconds.

Then stepped back before they noticed.

Some moments were not his.

The next morning, after parents collected kids and storm weakened, Jake found Sophia outside on lodge porch.

Snow covered everything.

She held coffee.

He stood beside.

“I heard you and Avery.”

Sophia looked.

“You were listening?”

“Accidentally.”

“Rude.”

“Yes.”

Jake exhaled.

“I love you.”

Sophia froze.

He had not planned.

Perfect.

She stared.

Jake continued.
