But it was deliberate.
And several people saw it.
I held my ground.
For one moment, I felt the anger rising fast enough to overwhelm my judgment.
Then I remembered my father's voice.
Don't let somebody else's bad decision become yours.
I stepped away.
Daniel looked sharply toward Patricia.
"Stop."
She turned.
"What?"
"Do not put your hands on him again."
Her expression twisted.
"You're defending him?"
"I'm telling you to stop making this worse."
She stared.
Then pointed toward my house.
"This community was peaceful before people started moving in and refusing to follow standards!"
Several neighbors had emerged onto their porches.
One woman held a phone.
An older man stood beside his mailbox watching silently.
Patricia noticed the audience.
For a moment, her expression changed.
Then she raised her voice.
"Everyone needs to understand that the HOA is doing its job!"
I looked around the street.
Then said quietly, "By forging a towing authorization?"
She spun toward me.
"Nobody forged anything!"
Daniel lifted the document.
"Somebody did."
The words silenced her for half a second.
Then she reached for her phone.
"I'm calling my attorney."
Daniel nodded.
"That's your right."
He took out his own phone.
"I'm contacting mine and reporting the document."
For the first time, Patricia looked uncertain.
Then she turned toward the white SUV parked across the street.
I followed her gaze.
Nolan Holloway was sitting behind the wheel.
I hadn't noticed him before.
His face was pale.
He was staring at the towing supervisor's phone.
When he saw me looking, he immediately lowered his eyes.
I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.
The company logo on his SUV door was the same one I'd seen outside the clubhouse.
Holloway Property Compliance.
And suddenly, Patricia's aggressive confidence looked less like spontaneous anger and more like the visible part of something planned.
The sheriff's deputies arrived twenty-three minutes later.
By then, Whitaker Recovery's crew had completely disconnected the Silverado from the lifting equipment.
The truck stood in my driveway.
I had inspected the visible exterior and taken photographs, but I had not attempted to drive it.
Daniel had agreed that the vehicle should be checked for any damage caused during the unauthorized lift.
One deputy spoke with me.
Another spoke with Patricia.
A third arrived later to collect information from the towing company.
