"The job came through an electronic channel that appeared approved. Our dispatcher should've escalated a private-residential-driveway removal, especially one initiated by a third party with disputed authority."
The deputy made notes.
Daniel looked toward the recovery vehicle.
"I'm responsible for reviewing our procedures and correcting that failure."
I studied him.
He could have blamed his workers.
Could have claimed the paperwork looked convincing enough.
Could have insisted his company had done nothing wrong because someone else submitted false information.
Instead, he acknowledged that the crew should not have begun the lift.
That didn't eliminate his company's responsibility.
But it told me something about his character.
He was willing to recognize a failure even when it made him look bad.
I respected that.
Later, when the deputy stepped away, Daniel approached me.
"Mr. Reed."
I turned.
"Marcus is fine."
He nodded.
"Marcus, I want to apologize."
I looked toward him.
He continued.
"Our crew should have verified this order more carefully before touching your truck."
I took a breath.
"Yes, they should have."
He nodded.
No argument.
No defensive explanation.
Just acknowledgment.
Then he said, "We'll arrange an independent inspection at our expense, without requiring you to waive any rights."
I studied him.
"Put that in writing."
He nodded immediately.
"Absolutely."
I looked toward the Silverado.
For a moment, I felt the anger returning.
Daniel noticed.
He waited.
Then I said, "That truck belonged to my father."
His expression changed.
"I'm sorry."
I nodded.
"He died last year."
Daniel looked toward the vehicle again.
For a moment, he seemed to understand why I had arrived looking ready to tear the world apart.
Then he said quietly, "We'll make sure the condition is documented properly."
I looked toward him.
"Thank you."
We shook hands.
Patricia was watching from across the street.
Her expression was unreadable.
But Nolan looked frightened.
And he had good reason to be.
Because while his mother was shouting about HOA authority, Daniel's office manager was examining the electronic records that would eventually lead investigators straight toward Holloway Property Compliance.
I spent the next several hours dealing with the aftermath.
My attorney arrived.
The deputies completed their initial response.
The towing crew left after providing the appropriate details.
