The first thing Daniel Brooks noticed was the white blouse.
Not the bag.
Not the gloves.
Not even the fact that someone had just opened the locked side gate of his backyard at nine seventeen on a Tuesday morning.
The blouse.
Bright white against the green hedge.
Daniel stood beside his kitchen window holding a mug of coffee while a woman slipped through the gate and pulled it quietly shut behind herself.
For one second, his mind refused to accept what his eyes were showing him.
Then she turned.
Lorraine Whitaker.
Of course.
Daniel slowly lowered the mug.
Across the kitchen, Detective Elena Martinez stopped speaking.
She had been halfway through a sentence about timestamp inconsistencies in the previous month's trespassing report. Now she followed Daniel's stare toward the window.
Lorraine moved carefully along the stone path.
She wore white pants, a fitted white button-front blouse, pale gloves, oversized sunglasses, and low expensive shoes that were completely inappropriate for creeping through someone's garden.
A large cream-colored tote hung from one shoulder.
The embroidered HOA logo faced outward.
Daniel almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because Lorraine had apparently decided that if she was going to trespass, she might as well bring organizational branding.
Elena moved beside him.
“That's her?”
Daniel nodded.
“Lorraine Whitaker. HOA president.”
Elena watched through the glass.
“You invited her?”
“No.”
“Expecting her?”
“No.”
“Gate supposed to be unlocked?”
Daniel looked at her.
Elena nodded once.
“Right.”
They remained still.
Outside, Lorraine paused near the patio and looked toward the rear windows.
Daniel instinctively stepped backward.
Elena caught his forearm.
“Don't move fast.”
Daniel looked at her.
“She is in my yard.”
“I know.”
“She has been in my yard before.”
“I know.”
“She is carrying something.”
“I see it.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
For eight months, he had been waiting for proof.
Not suspicion.
Not another blurry recording.
Proof.
Now it was walking across his lawn in white pants.
Elena spoke quietly.
“Let her show us what she's doing.”
Daniel wanted to argue.
Then Lorraine crouched beside the raised garden bed.
The argument disappeared.
She placed the HOA tote on the ground.
Opened it.
Reached inside.
Daniel's entire body became still.
Elena's expression changed.
Lorraine removed a small sealed packet.
Then another.
Then a third.
Nothing about them looked like gardening supplies.
Daniel stared.
“What is that?”
Elena did not answer immediately.
She watched Lorraine place the packets beneath the thick rosemary bushes near the rear fence.
Then Lorraine reached back into the tote.
More.
Elena whispered, “Stay here.”
Daniel looked toward her.
“What is she putting in my yard?”
“Daniel.”
“Tell me.”
“Based on packaging, possibly controlled substances.”
His stomach dropped.
For months, Lorraine had irritated him.
Harassed him.
Fined him.
Photographed his house.
Accused him.
But this was different.
This was not a violation notice.
Not a landscaping dispute.
Not a petty neighborhood power game.
This could put him in handcuffs.
Daniel moved toward the patio door.
Elena stepped in front of him.
“No.”
“She's planting drugs in my backyard.”
“I know.”
“And you want me to stand here?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stared at her.
Elena kept her voice low.
“If you go outside angry, she stops.”
“Good.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
