They were standing in the kitchen when the gate opened.
And everything changed.
Lorraine did not immediately understand the seriousness of being caught.
That became clear within thirty seconds.
Elena told her to keep her hands visible.
Lorraine raised them.
Then said:
“You cannot detain me on private HOA business.”
Daniel closed his eyes behind the window.
Elena remained calm.
“What business?”
Lorraine looked toward the garden.
“Compliance inspection.”
“With narcotics?”
Lorraine's face changed.
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
Elena pointed toward the bushes.
“We watched you remove packets from your bag.”
Lorraine laughed.
Too fast.
“You misunderstood.”
“Okay.”
Elena nodded.
“What are they?”
“Testing samples.”
Daniel almost walked outside just to hear that explanation better.
Elena said:
“Testing what?”
Lorraine hesitated.
“Soil.”
Elena looked toward the bushes.
“You test soil with packaged narcotics?”
“They aren't narcotics.”
“What are they?”
Lorraine's confidence faltered.
“I was given them.”
“By whom?”
“Someone concerned.”
“Who?”
“Anonymous.”
Daniel whispered through the closed window:
“Everything is anonymous with her.”
Elena ignored him.
Lorraine adjusted her handbag.
Elena said:
“Don't reach inside.”
“I need my phone.”
“Leave your hands where they are.”
Lorraine stared.
Then saw Daniel.
He had stepped into view.
Her expression transformed.
“Daniel.”
He opened the window slightly.
“Morning.”
“You set me up.”
Daniel laughed once.
The audacity almost impressed him.
“You entered my locked yard carrying drugs.”
“They're not mine.”
“That's literally the problem.”
“You have been creating a hostile environment for months.”
Daniel stared.
Elena stepped between sightlines.
“This conversation is over.”
Lorraine looked at her.
“Am I under arrest?”
“Not yet.”
That finally reached her.
The color drained from Lorraine's face.
Elena called for additional officers.
The packets remained where Lorraine had placed them.
No one touched them until evidence technicians arrived.
Daniel stood in his kitchen watching strangers move through the garden he had once considered peaceful.
He felt violated in a way the prior trespasses had not produced.
Those incidents had been invasions.
This was construction.
Someone had tried to build a crime around him.
His home was not merely being entered.
It was being turned into evidence.
Maya arrived forty minutes later.
Daniel had called her immediately.
She stepped into the kitchen, saw Lorraine seated outside under supervision, then looked at Daniel.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good.”
He stared.
She corrected herself.
“Accurate.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
Maya looked through the window.
“What happened?”
He explained.
When he finished, she remained silent for several seconds.
Then:
“Do not talk to the HOA.”
“I wasn't planning to.”
“Do not post.”
“No.”
“Do not answer neighbors.”
“Fine.”
