He raised his eyes.

"Yes?"

She hesitated.

"I know you don't trust me yet."

His expression softened slightly.

She continued.

"But I want you to know that when I said I admired your honesty, I meant it."

Gabriel looked toward the fire.

For several seconds, he didn't answer.

Then he said quietly, "I believe you admired it."

Clara's heart sank.

He looked back at her.

"What I don't understand is why you couldn't give me the same."

Tears filled her eyes.

She swallowed.

"Because I was afraid the truth would cost me the only safe place I'd found."

Gabriel nodded slowly.

Then said, "The truth usually costs something."

He paused.

"But hiding it often costs more."

Clara lowered her eyes.

"I know."

For a moment, the kitchen was silent.

Then Gabriel added another log to the fire.

He glanced toward her.

"Would you help me plan the winter meals?"

She looked surprised.

"Of course."

He smiled faintly.

"I've survived winters on beans and dried meat, but I'd rather not repeat the experience if it can be avoided."

Clara laughed softly.

Then moved toward the pantry.

For the next hour, they counted supplies.

Flour.

Beans.

Potatoes.

Dried apples.

Salted meat.

Preserved vegetables.

And jars of peaches.

Clara wrote everything in the ledger.

Gabriel suggested quantities.

She calculated how long the food might last.

Then identified several items they should purchase before the roads became difficult.

He studied her work.

"You're good at this."

She smiled.

"I had practice."

He looked toward her.

"Where?"

She hesitated.

Then answered.

"Keeping accounts for the woman I worked for in St. Louis."

Gabriel nodded.

For a moment, he seemed thoughtful.

Then he asked, "Did you enjoy it?"

Clara considered the question.

"Yes."

She smiled faintly.

"I liked making confusing things understandable."

Gabriel laughed.

"Then perhaps you should start with me."

She looked toward him.

Their eyes met.

For a brief moment, the pain between them seemed less overwhelming.

Then Jasper barked at the door.

The moment passed.

But it left something behind.

The beginning of ordinary companionship.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But the possibility of it.

By early December, the ranch had begun changing in ways neither Gabriel nor Clara fully recognized.

The kitchen became warmer.

Not because the stove burned hotter.

Because someone was usually working beside it.
