The Black woman immediately knew the next few seconds mattered.

She softened her tone.

“I am not trying to embarrass you.”

The sheriff laughed.

“Little late for that.”

She continued.

“You stopped me because you said my car crossed the center line.”

“It did.”

“It did not.”

“I watched it.”

“You were behind me for less than forty seconds.”

“That’s enough.”

“You then asked where I bought the vehicle.”

“Routine.”

“Who owned it.”

“Routine.”

“What I did for a living.”

“Routine.”

“How I could afford it.”

The room went quiet.

The sheriff straightened.

“That isn’t how I said it.”

The Black woman looked toward the younger deputy.

The sheriff noticed.

“You don’t look at him.”

She returned her gaze.

“Your deputy’s body camera recorded the stop.”

The younger deputy’s face changed.

The sheriff stared at him.

“Camera running?”

The young deputy swallowed.

“Yes, sir.”

The sheriff looked angry enough that for one second everyone forgot the woman was the person in cuffs.

Then he recovered.

“Good.”

He looked at her.

“Then it’ll show you refused instructions.”

“It will show that you asked me to unlock a briefcase unrelated to any traffic violation.”

“It was suspicious.”

“Why?”

“You got out of the car and reached toward it.”

“You ordered me out of the car.”

“You reached afterward.”

“For my registration.”

“You said registration was in the glove box.”

“It was.”

The sheriff paused.

The Black woman continued.

“The briefcase was on the back seat.”

Silence.

The desk deputy glanced toward the younger officer.

The sheriff changed direction.

“You kept interrupting.”

“That is not obstruction.”

“You don’t decide that.”

“No.”

She nodded.

“The law does.”

The sheriff slammed one palm against the booking counter.

“Enough.”

Nobody moved.

He pointed toward the female deputy.

“Finish processing her.”

Then toward the Black woman.

“You’ll get your phone call when I say.”

She looked at him.

“I am entitled to contact counsel.”

“You will.”

“When?”

“After you cool off.”

The Black woman slowly leaned forward.

“Sheriff.”

“What?”

“You have now converted an unsupported roadside detention into a custodial arrest because you disliked being questioned.”

The sheriff stared.

She continued.

“And now you are conditioning access to counsel on whether my demeanor satisfies you.”

His face went red.
