“This credential is authentic.”
Cleary immediately responded.
“I had no way to know that.”
Isaiah laughed once.
Quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
Cleary’s face reddened.
“What?”
Isaiah said:
“I gave you a way.”
Daniels looked at him.
“What did you tell him?”
“The verification number was printed on the back.”
Rachel examined one broken piece.
There it was.
A federal contact line.
Still visible.
Daniels looked toward Cleary.
The sheriff said nothing.
Avery asked:
“Sheriff, where is the vehicle?”
“Impound.”
“Was it searched?”
“Yes.”
“Warrant?”
Cleary hesitated.
“Incident to arrest.”
Avery looked at Isaiah.
“Were you arrested before the search?”
“Yes.”
“For?”
Isaiah listed the charges.
Avery’s expression became increasingly unreadable.
Daniels asked:
“Radar evidence?”
Cleary pointed toward his office.
“My unit.”
Avery said:
“We’ll need the device logs.”
Cleary looked at him.
“Excuse me?”
“Radar unit logs.”
“Dash video.”
“Body-camera footage.”
“Dispatch records.”
“Impound inventory.”
“Booking documents.”
Cleary stared.
“This is now an investigation?”
Avery answered:
“It became one when questions were raised about the basis for detention and destruction of identification.”
Cleary looked toward Isaiah.
“You did this.”
Isaiah shook his head.
“No.”
“You did.”
“You made the stop.”
“You broke the card.”
“You wrote the charges.”
“I made a phone call.”
“That’s all.”
Daniels looked at Cleary.
“Sheriff, Sergeant Brooks is leaving with us.”
Cleary laughed without humor.
“He has charges.”
Avery spoke.
“County prosecutor has declined immediate filing pending evidence review.”
Cleary froze.
“What?”
Rachel glanced at the clock.
Apparently another conversation had happened while Cleary was in his office.
Avery continued.
“He’s released.”
Cleary’s face went red.
“You don’t run my jail.”
“No.”
“The prosecutor decides whether charges proceed.”
“And he wants the evidence before doing so.”
Daniels handed the broken credential pieces to Isaiah.
He looked down at them.
Two pieces.
Twenty-two years reduced to a fracture through his photograph.
She said softly:
“We’ll replace it.”
Isaiah nodded.
“Thank you.”
Then Cleary said:
“It’s plastic.”
Isaiah looked up.
The room changed.
Daniels turned too.
Cleary shrugged.
“You people are acting like I burned the Constitution.”
Isaiah walked toward him.
Not aggressively.
Slowly.
