But there was an unusual detail.
Theo did appear interested in the food.
He watched it.
And once he finally approached, he was capable of eating.
The problem seemed to be getting him through those first few feet between himself and the bowl.
Then staff noticed Luna’s role.
Luna Kept Taking the First Piece
It would have been easy to interpret Luna’s behavior as ordinary food stealing.
She saw kibble.
She took kibble.
Nothing particularly unusual about that.
Except Luna often didn’t remain over Theo’s bowl and consume his entire meal.
She would approach, take a piece, and move away.
That was when Theo came forward.
At first, the timing could have been coincidence.
But the pattern repeated.
Theo waited.
Luna approached.
One piece disappeared.
Theo ate.
The staff couldn’t know exactly what the action meant to him. There was no way to determine whether Luna had performed the same behavior in their previous home or whether Theo had learned some particular feeding routine while living there.
What mattered was the behavior they could actually see.
Theo was more willing to approach his food immediately after Luna had approached it first.
That observation gave staff something useful to work with.
They Didn’t Want Theo to Depend on That Routine Forever
Keeping familiar dogs together can sometimes help during the transition into a shelter, provided the arrangement is safe and appropriate for both animals.
But Theo also needed to become comfortable eating without relying entirely on Luna.
There was another practical concern.
Because Theo was underweight, staff had to make sure Luna wasn’t consuming a meaningful portion of the calories intended for him.
So rather than simply allowing Luna unrestricted access to his meals, feeding became something that could be watched more carefully.
Theo needed enough space that he did not feel pressured.
