There was no dramatic breakthrough.

No morning when he suddenly became a completely different dog.

Instead, the distance began to shrink.

Theo sometimes stood closer to the bowl.

His hesitation became shorter.

There were moments when Luna remained nearby without reaching into his food and Theo still moved forward.

Those were the moments staff wanted.

Not because Luna had become unimportant.

But because Theo was beginning to perform the hardest part of the routine himself.

Taking the first step.

One Piece of Kibble Had Never Really Been the Important Part

To someone walking past the kennel for the first time, Luna stealing Theo’s food might have looked like a behavior that needed to be stopped immediately.

But watching the entire interaction changed the picture.

Luna wasn’t being allowed to take Theo’s meals.

Staff still had to protect the food an underweight dog needed.

Yet that single piece of kibble revealed something important about Theo’s behavior.

The full bowl wasn’t necessarily the difficult part.

Approaching it was.

And for a while, watching Luna walk up to that bowl seemed to make that first approach easier.

As Theo adjusted to the shelter, the hope wasn’t that Luna would continue stealing the first bite forever.

It was that eventually she wouldn’t need to.

And on the meals when Theo finally stepped toward his bowl while Luna stayed where she was, the change looked almost insignificant from outside the kennel.

There was still the same bowl.

The same kibble.

The same two dogs.

Only this time, every piece was still there when Theo lowered his head and began to eat.
