“You really believe that.”

The attendant heard the judgment.

Her cheeks flushed.

“Do not speak to me like that.”

The Black woman said nothing.

That apparently angered her more.

“You came onto a private ramp dressed like you’re going to some fashion event, refuse to explain who sent you, refuse to leave, and now you’re accusing us of something because we won’t let you onto a multimillion-dollar aircraft.”

The younger ground employee looked toward her sharply.

Even the captain’s face changed.

Too far.

The Black woman’s voice became very soft.

“What exactly about my clothing interferes with my authorization?”

The attendant realized it.

The trap was her own sentence.

She tried to recover.

“I’m saying your behavior is unusual.”

“My behavior?”

“Yes.”

“I arrived.”

“You blocked me.”

“I offered credentials.”

“You refused them.”

“I asked you to verify.”

“You threatened security.”

The attendant’s mouth tightened.

The Black woman gestured toward her displaced handbag.

“You moved my property with your shoe.”

No answer.

“And now my clothing is evidence against me.”

The captain stepped forward.

“Let’s reset.”

The Black woman looked at him.

“Eight and a half minutes late.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

The captain lowered his voice.

“Give me your identification.”

Finally.

The woman opened her handbag.

The lead attendant spoke immediately.

“Captain, you do not need to entertain this.”

He turned.

“Enough.”

The first visible fracture in the crew.

The Black woman removed a slim card wallet.

Before she could take out the identification, the lead attendant’s radio sounded.

“Ramp Four, operations.”

The captain reached for his own radio.

“Go ahead.”

A male voice answered.

“Please hold current boarding position. Operations director en route.”

The captain frowned.

“Reason?”

“Director will brief you in person.”

Everyone became still.

The Black woman checked her watch.

Nine minutes.

Three seconds.

The lead attendant looked toward the terminal.

“Did you call somebody?”

The Black woman returned the wallet to her bag.

“I’ve been standing in front of you.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“No.”

The blonde attendant stepped closer.

“Who are you?”

Finally.

The Black woman’s face revealed almost nothing.

“Someone you could have identified nine minutes ago.”

The attendant’s jaw tightened.

The young ground employee turned away to hide what might have been a smile.

The captain saw.

“Enough.”

Now he sounded nervous.

A black operations SUV emerged from behind the nearest hangar.

The lead attendant watched it approach.

The Black woman did too.
