The quiet before fires caught.

The first smell of coffee.

The sound of eighty hungry men becoming seventy-eight when two were away, eighty-one when travelers arrived.

The certainty that her work mattered immediately.

She loved Amos complaining about onions.

Ben murdering dough less often.

The blacksmith stealing biscuits when he thought she was not watching.

The way men began saying “thank you” after meals without embarrassment.

And Nathaniel.

That problem grew daily.

He never touched her without reason after the snow incident.

Which made her think about being touched constantly.

He ate what she served.

Never demanded special meals.

Defended her authority when a newly hired hand refused orders from a woman.

The incident lasted thirty seconds.

The man said:

“I don't take kitchen orders from females.”

Nathaniel happened to be passing.

He stopped.

“Then don't eat kitchen food.”

The man laughed.

Nathaniel did not.

By supper, the issue was resolved.

Not because Nathaniel told Lena how to run the kitchen.

Because he made clear it was hers to run.

That distinction mattered.

Then came the blizzard.

February nineteenth.

Weather moved over Black Ridge before noon.

By two, visibility disappeared.

Twenty-two riders remained outside moving cattle from an exposed pasture.

Lena prepared food.

Hot broth.

Coffee.

Bread.

Dry blankets near the stove.

At seven, seventeen men returned.

Five did not.

Nathaniel was among the missing.

Lena stood at the kitchen window.

Snow erased everything beyond the lantern.

Ben tried to reassure her.

“Boss knows these hills.”

“Men who know hills freeze too.”

“He'll come.”

Lena said nothing.

At nine, two more riders appeared.

One injured.

Three missing.

Nathaniel still gone.

Doctor Cole treated the injured man.

Lena asked:

“Where?”

“North ravine.”

“Boss stayed.”

“Why?”

“Horse went down.”

Lena’s stomach dropped.

“Whose?”

“His.”

Nathaniel had given another rider his spare horse.

Then continued on foot looking for the last missing hand.

Of course.

Lena hated him.

At ten thirty, the front door slammed open.

Two men stumbled inside.

One supported Nathaniel.

Lena ran.

His face was nearly white.

Ice coated his beard.

One glove gone.

“Get him near the stove.”

Doctor Cole arrived.

Nathaniel tried to speak.

“No.”

Lena shouted.

“You don't get to talk.”

His eyebrows rose weakly.

She removed his coat.

Boots.

Wet outer layers.

His right hand was badly frostbitten.

Doctor Cole examined it.

“Could lose two fingers.”

Lena went cold.

Nathaniel stared at his hand.

Then at Lena.

“Bad for bread.”

She burst into tears.

In front of everyone.

Nathaniel’s expression changed.

“Hey.”

She slapped his shoulder.

Not hard.

“Idiot.”

“Ow.”

“You gave away your horse.”

“Evan was hurt.”

“You walked through a blizzard.”

“Tom was missing.”

“You could have died.”

Nathaniel became quiet.
