“YOUR FATHER LEFT YOU A FARM, AND YOU TURNED IT INTO A DAMN GARBAGE DUMP!”

The insult echoed across the dusty farmyard as thousands of broken white eggshells poured from an enormous plastic container, crashing into a mountain of discarded shells beneath the Idaho afternoon sun.

The young woman holding the container didn't look up.

Her name wasn't important to the two men laughing at her. To them, she was simply the twenty-eight-year-old daughter of a stubborn farmer who had died leaving behind a failing agricultural property and one ridiculous idea.

She was extraordinarily beautiful, with clear blue-green eyes, naturally flushed cheeks, a strong, athletic figure, and thick chestnut-brown hair pulled into a messy bun.

But there was nothing glamorous about the way she looked that afternoon.

Her faded denim-blue work shirt was damp with sweat. The sleeves were rolled above her elbows. A mud-stained brown leather apron hung over her fitted dark work pants, and her heavy boots were coated with the dust of an Idaho summer.

She had been working since four-thirty that morning.

Her shoulders ached.

Her palms were blistered.

And the enormous white container in her hands was almost too heavy to control.

Still, she kept tipping it.

More eggshells spilled out.

They struck the pile with a dry, rattling sound.

The mountain grew higher.

Behind her stood an old black pickup truck, a weathered wooden barn, and several stacks of agricultural pallets.

Beyond the buildings, green trees lined the edge of the property, and the dry foothills rose against a brilliant blue sky.

It should have been a peaceful afternoon.

Instead, two local farmers had decided to turn her work into a public humiliation.

The heavier man was nearly sixty, with a thick gray beard, broad stomach, dirty baseball cap, faded olive-green work jacket, and worn jeans.

He stood beside the pickup laughing so hard that his shoulders shook.

His companion was slightly leaner, with weathered cheeks, short gray stubble, and the smug expression of someone enjoying another person's misfortune.

The heavier farmer pointed toward the enormous pile.

“LOOK AT THAT! Thousands of broken eggshells! Your daddy must be rolling in his grave!”

The younger woman tightened her grip on the container.

“Don't talk about my father.”

The man laughed louder.

“Why not? He left you good farmland, and now you've got more chicken trash than crops!”

The second farmer slapped his thigh.

“Nobody's paying a damn penny for broken eggshells!”

The woman lowered the nearly empty container.

Her jaw tightened.

For a moment, she stared at the two men.

They had been mocking her for nearly a year.
