They had laughed when she purchased discarded eggshells from commercial egg processors.

Laughed when she renovated the old packing shed.

Laughed when she sold her remaining cattle to buy equipment they didn't recognize.

And laughed when she told them that agricultural waste might eventually become the most valuable product her farm had ever produced.

Now they'd come directly into her yard to watch what they believed was the final collapse of her father's legacy.

The heavier farmer took another step forward.

“Let me give you some advice, sweetheart. Sell this place while there's still something left to sell.”

She lowered the container onto the ground.

“I'm not selling.”

He smiled.

“You've got a barn full of junk, a mountain of eggshells, and a mortgage payment coming due.”

The second farmer nodded toward the pile.

“What's the plan? Start selling chicken bones to tourists?”

Both men roared with laughter.

The young woman slowly removed her work gloves.

Her blue-green eyes hardened.

“You finished?”

The heavier farmer grinned.

“Not quite.”

He pointed toward the enormous mound.

“I'd pay good money to see the county inspector's face when he gets a look at this mess.”

The woman stared at him.

Then something shifted in her expression.

The anger didn't disappear.

It became colder.

More deliberate.

She looked past the men toward the tall pile of eggshells.

Then smiled.

Not a friendly smile.

A smile that made the heavier farmer stop laughing.

“What?” he demanded.

She folded her arms.

“You really think I spent eighteen months building a mountain of garbage?”

The lean farmer snorted.

“Looks that way.”

She tilted her head.

“Then tell me something.”

Both men watched.

“Why do you think six commercial trucks have been waiting on my property since sunrise?”

The heavier farmer blinked.

“What trucks?”

The woman pointed toward the other side of the enormous pile.

“Turn around.”

The men hesitated.

Then came a deep metallic rumble.

A motor started somewhere beyond the eggshell mountain.

A warning light flashed above an unseen building.

And behind the pile, an enormous industrial door began sliding upward.

The two farmers slowly turned.

Their laughter faded.

Inside the newly renovated processing shed stood a line of sealed stainless-steel equipment, large white industrial collection bags, laboratory sampling stations, and pallets stacked with professionally packaged agricultural materials.

Several commercial trucks waited along a loading area that had been concealed from the road by the old barn and the enormous eggshell pile.

A forklift moved toward the first trailer.

An engineer in a navy work jacket stepped outside carrying a clipboard.
