“The mechanism beneath the seconds display. Was the original design retained, or did the company substitute the revised bridge?”

For several seconds, the room remained quiet.

The associate's face reddened.

“Madam, our watches are manufactured to the highest technical standards.”

“That doesn't answer my question.”

The blonde woman's lips tightened.

“Are you questioning my expertise?”

“I'm asking about a watch.”

The associate leaned forward.

“Look, I don't know what you're trying to prove, but we have genuine clients waiting.”

The Black woman looked toward the other customers.

Nobody had been waiting at her counter.

Several people looked away.

Then she turned back.

“I'm a genuine client.”

The associate laughed again.

“Of course you are.”

The woman remained completely still.

But something changed in her expression.

The quiet patience disappeared.

In its place came a colder, more focused look.

“Would you speak to a white customer wearing this gown the same way?”

The associate froze.

Then gave an offended little gasp.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

The blonde woman straightened her blazer.

“How dare you imply that I'm discriminating against you?”

The Black woman didn't raise her voice.

“I'm asking whether you would refuse to check another customer's appointment while repeatedly suggesting that person couldn't afford your merchandise.”

The associate looked around.

Several customers were watching.

Her expression hardened.

“I will not tolerate accusations against my professionalism.”

“Then demonstrate it.”

“How?”

“Check the appointment.”

The associate reached toward the telephone beneath the counter.

“I think this conversation is over.”

The Black woman glanced at the receiver.

“I'm still waiting to see the watch.”

“Then you'll be waiting a very long time.”

The associate lifted the telephone.

“Security can escort you out.”

The young employee standing beside the neighboring display took an involuntary step forward.

“Perhaps we should check the appointment first.”

The blonde associate turned sharply.

“Nobody asked you.”
