Her eyes moved toward the associate.

β€œInstead, I discovered that the company still treats people exactly the way it treated him.”

The room remained silent.

Then, from a doorway leading into the boutique's service workshop, an elderly white watchmaker spoke.

His voice was so quiet that several customers almost didn't hear it.

β€œYour father didn't come here asking for money.”

The Black woman turned sharply.

The elderly man stood beneath the doorway wearing a dark-blue workshop apron over a white shirt.

His hands were thin.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

And his eyes were filled with tears.

β€œHe came here because he thought somebody would understand what he'd made.”

The woman stared.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then she whispered, β€œYou knew him?”

The elderly watchmaker nodded.

β€œYes.”

His voice broke.

β€œAnd I've spent twenty-three years regretting what happened after he walked through those doors.”

The woman felt the floor shift beneath her.

Because she had spent most of her adult life believing her father had been ignored by the company.

She had never imagined someone inside Aster & Vale still remembered him.

And she certainly hadn't imagined that this quiet elderly employee might be holding the missing evidence she'd spent fourteen years searching for.

But before she could ask him another question, the manager's tablet vibrated again.

A new corporate message appeared.

This one was marked urgent.

PRESERVE ALL ORIGINAL MERIDIAN DEVELOPMENT RECORDS β€” LEGAL HOLD EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

The manager read it.

Then looked toward the watchmaker.

The elderly man seemed to understand exactly what it meant.

His expression changed.

He stepped forward.

Then said softly, β€œIf you're really here for the truth, I need to show you something before anybody else gets to the archive.”

The Black woman stared at him.

β€œWhat?”

He took a shaky breath.

β€œA letter your father wrote.”
