For several seconds, the boutique was completely silent.

Then the watchmaker whispered the words that would change everything.

โ€œHe asked us to give it to you when you were old enough to understand.โ€

Twenty-three years earlier, long before she owned a global investment company, the Black woman had been a little girl sitting on a wooden stool inside a narrow watch-repair shop in Harlem.

The shop occupied the ground floor of an aging brick building between a tailor and a grocery store.

Its front window displayed old clocks, repaired wristwatches, and a handwritten sign offering battery replacements and mechanical servicing.

A small brass bell hung above the door.

Whenever a customer entered, it rang twice.

The girl loved that sound.

It meant someone had brought her father another puzzle.

Sometimes it was a grandfather clock that stopped striking.

Sometimes a wristwatch with a broken mainspring.

Sometimes an old pocket watch belonging to someone who couldn't afford a replacement.

Her father repaired all of them.

He was a tall Black American man with very dark brown skin, intelligent eyes, and large hands that seemed almost too big for the delicate mechanical parts he handled.

But those hands were extraordinarily precise.

He could hold a tiny gear between two fingers without trembling.

He could identify a damaged escapement by listening to the rhythm of a watch.

And he could spend hours studying a movement until he understood exactly why it refused to run.

His daughter believed he could fix anything.

One rainy afternoon, she brought him a broken plastic toy.

The little wheels had fallen off.

She placed it on his workbench.

โ€œDaddy?โ€

He looked up from a pocket watch.

โ€œYes, princess?โ€

โ€œCan you fix this?โ€

He examined the toy.

Then smiled.

โ€œProbably.โ€

She watched him work.

Within minutes, the wheels were turning again.

She clapped.
