“Overruled. Limited answer.”
Maya looked toward Keller.
He sat beside counsel.
For the first time since the roadside, their eyes met.
“No.”
The answer surprised everyone.
The attorney did too.
“You don't hate him?”
“No.”
“After what you say he did?”
“Hate is not an element of any charge I am aware of.”
A juror covered a smile.
The attorney frowned.
“Do you want him punished?”
“I want the legal process to determine responsibility.”
“That is very careful.”
“I am FBI Director.”
“Careful answers are part of the job.”
The attorney sat.
Maya left.
The jury convicted Keller on most counts.
Briggs on conspiracy, obstruction, fraud, civil-rights violations, and related charges.
Mullen pleaded before verdict.
Samuel Keene, the tow operator, received prison time and forfeited assets.
Ashbury Fleet Holdings was dissolved.
County auction contracts were suspended.
Twenty-three victims received restitution from seized proceeds and a federal civil settlement.
Dorothy Greene received enough to cover the value of her Lexus, medical costs, and years of improper fees.
She called Maya afterward.
“They sent money.”
“I heard.”
“It doesn't give me back the car.”
“No.”
“I don't care.”
Maya smiled.
“What will you buy?”
“Toyota.”
Maya laughed.
“Very practical.”
“I’m done with luxury.”
“Fair.”
Dorothy paused.
“Your Rolls fixed?”
“Yes.”
“You driving it?”
“Sometimes.”
“Good.”
Maya was surprised.
“Why good?”
“Because if you stop driving it because of them, they're still controlling something.”
Maya considered.
Then nodded though Dorothy could not see.
“You sound like my mother.”
“Your mother sounds smart.”
“Unfortunately.”
Dorothy laughed.
The Clayburn County Sheriff’s Office changed dramatically.
Sheriff Briggs was removed.
A special election installed former state police commander Elena Marquez.
She inherited a department that half the county no longer trusted.
Her first meeting with Maya happened privately.
Marquez was fifty.
Puerto Rican American.
Short gray hair.
No patience for symbolism.
“I don't need FBI telling me how to run my department.”
she said.
Maya smiled faintly.
“Good.”
Marquez looked suspicious.
“You agree?”
“Yes.”
“You do need us to complete consent decree requirements.”
“That I know.”
“And I need you to tell me where federal recommendations are impractical.”
Marquez leaned back.
“You're not going to demand a press conference?”
“No.”
“Community wants one.”
“Then you should hold it.”
“Not me.”
Marquez studied her.
“Your face is half the reason this county is under microscope.”
“My face is not what committed crimes.”
Marquez smiled.
“Okay.”
They worked well together.
The county adopted body-camera activation rules with automatic alerts when officers failed to record traffic stops.
Impound decisions required supervisor review independent from towing vendors.
Vehicle seizure notices were tracked electronically.
Drivers received clear appeals.
