Maya stared at him.

“You just read registration in my name.”

“Documents can be forged.”

“Then verify them.”

“We are.”

“No.”

She glanced toward his cruiser.

“You’re standing here.”

Keller stepped forward until less than a foot separated them.

“Turn around.”

Maya did not move.

“Am I being detained?”

“Yes.”

“For suspected vehicle theft?”

“Yes.”

“Based on what?”

“The vehicle.”

“That is not probable cause.”

Doss laughed.

“You a lawyer?”

Maya looked at him.

“Yes.”

That was true too.

His laugh stopped.

Keller’s eyes narrowed.

“Turn around.”

Maya complied.

She felt Keller take her wrist.

Harder than necessary.

She said clearly:

“You are twisting my wrist.”

“Stop resisting.”

“I am not resisting.”

Doss chuckled behind them.

Maya’s jaw tightened.

She knew that phrase.

Everybody in law enforcement knew it.

Stop resisting.

Sometimes necessary.

Sometimes documentation created in advance.

Keller shoved her shoulder toward the Rolls.

Maya caught herself against the hood.

Her cheek nearly struck the metal.

She turned her head.

“Keller.”

He froze.

She had read the name patch.

But for an instant he seemed startled that she knew him.

Then anger replaced it.

“Don't use my name.”

“It’s on your uniform.”

His grip tightened.

Maya’s voice remained controlled.

“You need to loosen your hold.”

“You need to shut up.”

Doss opened the passenger door.

He began searching the interior.

Maya lifted her head.

“I do not consent to a search.”

Doss ignored her.

“I said I do not consent.”

Keller leaned over her.

“You're detained during a stolen-vehicle investigation.”

“You have not established the vehicle is stolen.”

“We don't need your permission.”

“You need lawful grounds.”

Doss pulled her handbag from the seat.

Maya’s stomach tightened.

Inside were the credentials.

If he opened the inner compartment, the moment ended.

Doss dumped the bag onto the seat instead.

Lip balm.

Wallet.

Keys.

Notebook.

He picked up Maya’s personal phone.

“Password?”

“No.”

Keller shoved her harder against the hood.

Maya winced.

“Password.”

“No.”

Doss looked at Keller.

“Maybe Face ID.”

Maya’s voice sharpened.

“Do not access my phone.”

Doss laughed.

Then held it toward her face.

Maya turned away.

The device remained locked.

“Cute.”
