An ornamental belt.

The daughter touched the fabric.

She remembered wearing traditional Thai clothing during school celebrations in Bangkok.

She remembered her father smiling proudly when she learned how to arrange the silk properly.

Then she looked toward the manager.

“I'll wear it.”

The manager nodded.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then the older employee who had sent the original message stepped forward.

He looked at the woman he'd known since childhood.

His eyes filled.

“Your father would be proud of you.”

She swallowed.

“I hope so.”

He smiled gently.

“He always said you listened better than anyone else in the family.”

A small laugh escaped her.

The older man continued.

“And he said that someday, the people who underestimated you would discover why listening mattered.”

The daughter looked down at the royal-blue silk.

Then smiled faintly.

“Perhaps Friday will be that day.”

But the dinner was still two nights away.

And before it arrived, the billionaire was already making a decision that would reveal just how far he was prepared to go.

The billionaire was in his Manhattan penthouse when his legal consultant called.

Rain struck the enormous windows, blurring the lights of the city far below. The apartment occupied the upper floors of a building overlooking Central Park, and nearly every object inside it had been selected to communicate wealth.

There were marble sculptures from Europe, rare paintings purchased at auction, and furniture so expensive that visitors were afraid to sit on it.

The billionaire stood beside a glass table, reviewing the proposed acquisition documents on a tablet.

His consultant spoke quickly.

“The escrow bank has requested additional confirmation of the controlling shareholder's authorization.”

The billionaire's expression tightened.

“Why?”

“They say the transfer instructions must be independently authenticated.”

He looked toward the illuminated skyline.

“We've already provided the shareholder resolution.”

“The unsigned draft. They want the executed version.”

He sighed.

“Then give it to them.”

The consultant hesitated.

“There's another issue.”

The billionaire turned.

“What?”

“The employee stewardship approval.”

His jaw tightened.

“What about it?”

“The designated heritage properties require the special approval.”

The billionaire looked annoyed.

“That's an outdated provision.”

“It's still in the governing documents.”

He set down the tablet.

“Can we avoid it?”

The consultant hesitated.

“We could restructure which entities are transferred, but the underlying restrictions may still apply.”

The billionaire's expression became cold.

“Then find a way.”

The consultant remained quiet.

Finally, he said, “We need to be careful. If the controlling shareholder challenges the transaction, there could be serious consequences.”
