The sound of the slap echoed across the concrete plaza outside police headquarters, sharp enough to make a passing woman stop in the middle of the sidewalk.

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

The tall Black man stood perfectly still, his brown leather briefcase hanging from his left hand, his face turned slightly from the impact.

His charcoal-gray suit remained immaculate, his dark-green tie resting against his white shirt, but a red mark was already spreading across his left cheek. The man who had struck him, a stocky white police sergeant in a dark navy uniform, stood inches away with his right hand still raised.

“That's what happens when you don't know your place,” the sergeant snapped.

The Black man slowly turned his face back.

He was fifty years old, broad-shouldered, powerfully built, with a clean-shaven head and a neatly trimmed salt-and-pepper goatee. His expression had changed very little. Only the slight tightening around his eyes revealed how much the blow had hurt.

He looked at the sergeant's raised hand.

Then at the badge on his chest.

“Are you finished, Sergeant?”

The officer's face flushed.

“What did you just say to me?”

“I asked whether you were finished.”

The sergeant took an aggressive step forward.

“You think that fancy suit makes you somebody important?”

The Black man didn't answer.

“I'm talking to you!”

“I heard you.”

The sergeant pointed directly into his chest.

“Then answer me when I speak!”

The man glanced toward the revolving glass doors behind the officer.

“I came here for a scheduled appointment. You're preventing me from entering a public building, you've taken my identification, and you've just assaulted me.”

The sergeant gave a contemptuous laugh.

“Assaulted you?”

He looked around the plaza.

“Anybody see an assault?”

A woman standing beside a concrete planter slowly lowered her coffee cup.

A delivery driver stopped near the curb.

Two employees approaching the headquarters entrance looked at one another.

Neither spoke.

The sergeant smirked.

“That's what I thought.”

The Black man remained calm.

“Your body camera should have recorded what happened.”

The officer's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But the man noticed.

The sergeant instinctively glanced toward the small camera mounted on his uniform.

Its indicator light was dark.

He quickly looked away.

“Don't tell me how to do my job.”

The Black man studied him.

“I haven't started.”

The sergeant's eyes narrowed.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
