Then she spoke.

“So he thought you were just another Black man he could push around.”

The commissioner didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

She turned toward the stove.

Then turned back.

“You've spent your whole life trying to change how people like that behave.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“And now you're the one who got slapped.”

He looked toward the floor.

“Yes.”

She stepped closer.

“What are you feeling?”

He gave a tired laugh.

“Like I've had a very long first day.”

She didn't smile.

“That's not an answer.”

He looked into her eyes.

Then he exhaled.

“Angry.”

She nodded.

“Scared?”

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“A little.”

Her expression softened.

He continued.

“Not because he hit me.”

He looked toward the window.

“Because I've seen that look before.”

She waited.

“The expression of a man who believes the person in front of him can't do anything about what he's doing.”

His wife placed one hand against his chest.

He continued.

“When I was a young patrol officer, I saw colleagues who were convinced that any challenge to their authority justified escalation. Most were stopped by good supervisors. Some weren't.”

He looked toward her.

“I spent years believing we were improving.”

She nodded.

“And now?”

He took a breath.

“Now I know how much work is still left.”

For several moments, they stood quietly.

Then she asked, “Did you want to hit him back?”

The commissioner looked surprised.

He considered lying.

Then nodded.

“For about half a second.”

She smiled sadly.

“I'm glad you didn't.”

“So am I.”

She embraced him.

He held her tightly.

For the first time that day, he allowed his shoulders to relax.

His wife rested her head against his chest.

Then she whispered, “Don't let them turn this into a story about a commissioner who got embarrassed.”

He closed his eyes.

She continued.

“Make it about every person who doesn't have a title.”

He held her a little tighter.

“I intend to.”

The following morning, the commissioner received a call from the mayor.

The mayor sounded exhausted.

The video had dominated local coverage overnight.

Several council members demanded immediate disciplinary action.

Community organizations requested meetings.

The police union issued a statement emphasizing the need for a fair investigation.

And reporters wanted to know whether the commissioner intended to file a criminal complaint.

The mayor listened as the commissioner explained the investigative steps underway.
