โ€œI work at a nursing home. I take care of people who can barely stand, and I don't complain about the hours because those people need somebody.โ€

Her voice tightened.

โ€œBut I had to use money I'd saved for my own medical bills to get my son's car back.โ€

The young mechanic looked down.

His mother continued.

โ€œAnd every time we called the department, someone acted like we were bothering them.โ€

The commissioner felt the words settle heavily.

He'd heard similar accounts before.

But that didn't make this one less painful.

The mother leaned forward.

โ€œThen I saw your video.โ€

Her eyes filled.

โ€œI watched that officer hit you.โ€

The commissioner remained still.

She continued.

โ€œAnd suddenly everybody cared.โ€

Her voice broke.

โ€œPolice chiefs. Federal people. Investigators. Everybody.โ€

She wiped her eyes.

Then asked the question he'd been expecting.

โ€œWhere were all those people when he did it to my son?โ€

The room became silent.

The commissioner looked toward the young mechanic.

Then back at his mother.

โ€œI don't have an answer that makes what happened to your family acceptable.โ€

She stared at him.

He continued.

โ€œI can tell you that the complaint is being independently reviewed, along with the records concerning other encounters.โ€

The mother shook her head.

โ€œWe've heard that before.โ€

The commissioner nodded.

โ€œI understand.โ€

โ€œDo you?โ€

He didn't become defensive.

He didn't tell her about his long career.

He didn't list his accomplishments.

He simply listened.

The mother continued.

โ€œEverybody wants us to be patient. Everybody says there's a process.โ€

Her voice rose.

โ€œBut my son lost his car. Lost money. Nearly lost his job.โ€

She pointed toward him.

โ€œHe was nineteen.โ€

The commissioner looked toward the young man.

The mechanic finally spoke.

โ€œI didn't hit anybody.โ€

His voice was quiet.

The commissioner nodded.

โ€œI hear you.โ€

The young man looked up.

โ€œI didn't threaten him.โ€

The commissioner waited.

The mechanic continued.

โ€œHe kept saying I was making things worse.โ€

His jaw tightened.

โ€œI wasn't trying to embarrass him. I just wanted my car.โ€

The commissioner leaned forward.

โ€œDo you still have the recording from your phone?โ€

The young man nodded.

โ€œYes.โ€

The commissioner glanced toward the independent investigator.

Arrangements were made for the recording to be submitted and preserved appropriately.

Then the commissioner looked back at the mechanic.

โ€œThank you for telling us.โ€

The young man's eyes filled.

He looked away quickly.

The mother reached for his hand.
