She glanced at the federal investigators.

Neither spoke.

The commissioner continued.

β€œBefore we make assumptions about why the officer behaved as he did, we need to establish why he was there.”

He closed the folder.

β€œAnd who gave him his instructions.”

The sergeant sat alone in a small administrative interview room on the second floor.

His duty weapon had been secured according to procedure.

His department-issued communications equipment was being preserved.

He'd been informed that he was relieved from operational duty while the incident was examined.

A union representative and legal counsel had been contacted.

He understood that any administrative questioning would need to follow the rules governing employees' rights and the separation of compelled employment interviews from potential criminal proceedings.

But understanding procedures didn't make him feel better.

He kept replaying the moment.

The slap.

The glass doors opening.

The chief shouting.

The man's calm expression.

He had spent thirteen years wearing a uniform.

Thirteen years believing that the badge on his chest made people listen.

And now he was facing the possibility that a single encounter could end his career.

At first, he told himself he'd been unlucky.

The man should have identified himself properly.

The new commissioner should have arrived with an escort.

Someone should have warned him.

He repeated those arguments silently.

Then he remembered the credential holder.

The identification card he'd examined.

The title clearly printed beneath the man's photograph.

He felt sick.

He hadn't believed it because he didn't want to believe it.

Because accepting the identification would have required him to admit that the person he'd been treating as an inconvenience was someone with authority over him.

He had chosen to mock it instead.

A knock sounded at the door.

The sergeant straightened.

A female lieutenant entered.

She wore a dark uniform and carried a clipboard.

β€œI'm here to confirm your status and explain the next steps.”

He nodded.

She reviewed the administrative notice.

The preservation instructions.

And his obligations concerning department property and relevant records.

He listened impatiently.

Then asked, β€œAm I being fired?”

The lieutenant shook her head.

β€œNo final disciplinary decision has been made.”

He exhaled.

She continued.

β€œAn investigation will examine the incident. You should consult your representative regarding the process.”

He looked toward the table.

Then asked, β€œDo they know I was assigned there?”

The lieutenant nodded.

β€œThe assignment is being reviewed.”

He looked up sharply.

β€œBy who?”

β€œI don't have that information.”
