"Make sure this stops."
Outside, Hale had begun threatening to detain Marcus.
The veteran remained beside his truck, with both hands visible.
He was frightened.
Not because he'd never faced danger.
But because an armed police officer was behaving unpredictably while accusing him of wrongdoing that had never occurred.
Hale pointed toward the sidewalk.
"Get away from the truck."
Marcus shook his head slightly.
"I'm not obstructing anything. I own the vehicle."
The sergeant stepped closer.
"You think you can just make accusations against officers and walk away?"
Marcus looked toward the damaged tire.
For a moment, anger flashed across his face.
Then he took another slow breath.
"Sergeant, I saw you cut it."
Hale laughed.
"You saw what you wanted to see."
He glanced toward the camera above the store.
Then smirked.
"Good luck proving anything."
Marcus felt a wave of disbelief.
The sergeant wasn't simply denying what happened.
He seemed convinced the denial would be enough.
For years, Marcus had taught younger soldiers that accurate maintenance records mattered because someone's life might depend on them.
Now he was standing beside a disabled truck listening to a police officer suggest that facts didn't matter unless the person with authority chose to acknowledge them.
He looked toward the storefront.
Then said quietly, "You have no idea who's watching."
Hale's smile disappeared.
He reached toward Marcus's arm.
"Turn around."
Marcus stepped back.
"For what?"
"Obstruction."
Marcus shook his head.
"I'm not resisting, but I want to know the reason for any detention."
The sergeant's expression twisted.
He moved closer.
Then a woman's voice sounded from the hardware store entrance.
"Sergeant Hale. Stop right there."
Both men turned.
Laura Sutton stood beneath the white security camera, holding a phone and a small identification wallet.
She wore a plain navy blazer over a light blouse, dark trousers, and practical shoes.
Nothing about her appearance was theatrical.
But her voice was steady.
Hale looked irritated.
"Ma'am, get back inside."
Laura remained near the doorway.
"I'm a state investigator. I've just witnessed the incident through the store's camera system."
For a moment, Hale stared.
Then his eyes moved toward the identification she displayed.
His expression changed.
Laura continued.
"Additional personnel have been requested. Please step back from the civilian and avoid further physical contact."
