Hale looked toward Marcus.

Then toward the camera.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to process what had happened.

He had assumed the camera wasn't recording.

He had assumed Marcus would miss the hearing.

And he had assumed that, as usual, the only official account of the encounter would be his.

Now a state investigator was standing in front of him.

A witness who had watched the tire being damaged in real time.

Hale took a step backward.

"This man was interfering with a police investigation."

Laura kept her expression neutral.

"We'll document your account."

He pointed toward the Silverado.

"His vehicle is unsafe."

Marcus let out a breath of disbelief.

Laura looked toward the collapsed tire.

Then back at Hale.

"That condition will be documented too."

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then the sergeant looked toward Evelyn, who had appeared behind the glass door.

His face reddened.

"You're all working together."

Laura didn't argue.

She asked him to remain at the scene while appropriate supervisors responded.

Then she turned toward Marcus.

"Sir, are you injured?"

He looked down at his chest.

"My back hit the truck when he shoved me. I'm not sure about anything else."

Laura nodded.

"We'll arrange the necessary assistance and take your account separately."

Marcus glanced toward the tire.

His father's tire.

The truck they'd spent months restoring together.

For a moment, the damage seemed more personal than he could explain.

Then he looked toward Laura.

"How long have you been watching?"

She paused.

"Long enough to see what happened at the wheel."

Marcus closed his eyes.

For the first time since the sergeant approached him, he felt that he might not have to spend the rest of his life trying to convince people he was telling the truth.

A Bellhaven lieutenant arrived eleven minutes later.

She stepped from her patrol SUV and approached Laura, who provided her identification and explained the circumstances without making a public accusation beyond what she'd personally observed.

The lieutenant looked toward Hale.

He appeared pale.

His cap sat crooked.

And his hands were trembling slightly.

She asked him to step away from Marcus and provide an initial account through the appropriate process.
