Marcus stared at the rapidly deflating tire.

Then at the knife disappearing into Hale's pocket.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

"Sergeant, did you just slash my tire?"

Hale straightened.

"Step away from the vehicle."

Marcus looked at him in disbelief.

"That's my truck."

"I said step away."

Marcus remained where he was.

His eyes moved toward the damaged rubber.

"You're standing beside my tire with a knife, and it's losing air."

Hale stepped closer.

"You're interfering with a police investigation."

"What investigation?"

The sergeant's jaw tightened.

"Don't start questioning me."

Marcus took a slow breath.

He had learned years earlier that anger could make dangerous situations even worse.

He kept his hands visible.

"I want your supervisor called, and I want this documented."

Hale gave a short, ugly laugh.

"You think you're going to tell me how to do my job?"

Marcus looked directly at him.

"No. I'm asking you to follow the rules."

The sergeant lunged forward and shoved Marcus hard in the chest.

Marcus stumbled backward, catching himself against the side of his truck.

His shopping bag fell onto the sidewalk.

A small package of electrical connectors spilled out.

Across the street, a woman standing beside a parked sedan gasped.

Hale stepped closer.

"You want to find out what happens to people who make trouble for this department?"

Marcus slowly straightened.

He didn't raise his fists.

He didn't threaten the officer.

Instead, he looked toward the white security camera above the hardware store.

Then back at Hale.

"Sergeant," he said quietly, "you have no idea who's watching."

Hale followed his gaze.

For a moment, he studied the camera.

Then he smiled.

"That old thing?"

He laughed.

"Half the cameras in this town don't even work."

But what Hale didn't know was that the camera was working perfectly.

Its video was being saved.

And inside a small office behind the hardware store, someone was watching the confrontation live on a computer monitor.

Not the store owner.

Not an ordinary customer.

A woman who had spent eight months investigating a pattern of suspicious vehicle impoundments, missing evidence, and payments connected to Sergeant Hale's patrol assignments.

She had arrived at Miller's Hardware for an entirely different interview.

Now she was witnessing something nobody expected an experienced police officer to do in broad daylight.
