The seventy-eight-year-old Black man was begging for air when the police sergeant slammed him against the side of the patrol SUV for the second time.

His white hair brushed the vehicle's window.

His green-and-black plaid shirt twisted around his shoulders.

And his weathered hands rose instinctively toward the powerful officer gripping him by the collar.

"Please," the elderly man gasped. "You're hurting me."

The sergeant tightened his grip.

"Then stop fighting me!"

"I'm not fighting!"

The older man's voice cracked.

He was thin, with deeply lined cheeks, tired brown eyes, and the fragile posture of someone whose body had endured nearly eight decades of work, grief, and ordinary life.

He wasn't carrying a weapon.

He wasn't threatening anybody.

And he hadn't attempted to escape.

He had been standing in his own driveway, asking why a police officer wanted to search his pickup truck.

Now his back was pressed against a black patrol SUV while a muscular forty-two-year-old white sergeant shouted inches from his face.

Behind them stood a beautiful two-story suburban house with white columns, a broad front porch, and a polished wooden entrance door.

A gray pickup truck was parked near the garage.

Freshly trimmed grass bordered the driveway.

And a small American flag moved gently beside the porch steps.

It was the kind of peaceful Georgia neighborhood where people recognized their neighbors' cars and children rode bicycles before dinner.

Nobody expected to hear an elderly man crying out for help.

The sergeant didn't seem concerned.

His short light-brown hair was neatly trimmed, and his navy uniform carried silver sergeant's chevrons, a polished badge, and a radio clipped near his shoulder.

He had spent nearly twenty years in law enforcement.

He was accustomed to giving orders.

And he became particularly angry when someone asked him to explain those orders.

"You're going to jail today, old man."

The elderly father shook his head.

"For what?"

The sergeant leaned closer.

"Possession of stolen property."

The older man's eyes widened.

"I haven't stolen anything in my life."

The officer gave a contemptuous laugh.

"That's what they all say."

Then he shoved him again.

The elderly man's shoulder struck the vehicle.

His knees weakened.

One hand moved toward his chest.

"Please," he whispered. "My heart."

The sergeant frowned.

"Don't start pretending you're sick."

The old man's breathing became shallow.

His lips trembled.

He tried to remain standing, but his legs began giving way.
