But none of those things mattered more than the simple fact that the old man was still there to make a birthday wish.

Later that evening, after the guests departed, the son helped clean the kitchen.

His father sat at the table with a cup of tea.

The house had become quiet.

Outside, the porch lights illuminated the driveway.

The gray pickup remained parked beside the garage.

Its doors were locked.

The security cameras continued operating.

And the white columns glowed softly beneath the exterior lights.

The son placed the final plate in the dishwasher.

Then looked toward his father.

"Good birthday?"

The older man nodded.

"Very good."

The son smiled.

"Good."

For several moments, neither spoke.

Then the father looked toward the window.

"Remember that afternoon?"

The younger man's smile faded slightly.

"Which one?"

His father gave him a look.

The son understood.

He sat down.

"Yeah."

The elderly man stared toward the driveway.

For a long moment, he seemed to be searching for the right words.

Then he said, "I thought I was going to die."

The son felt his chest tighten.

He didn't interrupt.

The older man continued.

"When he pushed me against that car, I couldn't breathe."

His hands trembled slightly.

"I remember thinking I was never going to see this kitchen again."

The son looked down.

His father took a slow breath.

"Then I heard you."

The younger man looked up.

The old man smiled faintly.

"You came running out of the house."

The son nodded.

"I did."

His father continued.

"I don't remember everything you said."

He laughed softly.

"But I remember your voice."

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then the older man looked directly at him.

"Thank you."

The son swallowed.

"For what?"

"For coming."

The younger man's eyes filled.

"Dad, of course I came."

His father nodded.

"I know."

Then he reached across the table.

The son took his hand.

The old man squeezed gently.

"That's what your mother would've done."

The younger man couldn't speak.

For a moment, he remembered her standing in the kitchen.

Her laughter.

Her insistence that everybody eat before leaving the house.

And the way she'd always stood beside her husband when life became difficult.

The father looked toward her photograph.

Then smiled sadly.

"She would've been proud of you."

The son wiped his eyes.

"I miss her."

The older man nodded.

"Every day."

They sat together for a long time.
