At that exact moment, the wooden front door swung open.
A thirty-eight-year-old Black American man stepped onto the porch.
He was tall, athletic, with short black hair, a neatly trimmed beard, and a fitted navy-blue T-shirt over black trousers.
He carried a smartphone in his right hand.
At first, he looked confused.
Then he saw his father struggling against the patrol SUV.
His expression changed instantly.
"DAD!"
He ran down the porch steps.
The sergeant turned.
"Stay back!"
The son stopped several feet away.
His father was sinking toward the driveway.
One hand clutched his chest.
The other reached helplessly toward the younger man.
"Son," the elderly man gasped. "I can't breathe."
The son felt his stomach drop.
He had heard those words once before.
Three years earlier, when his father suffered a cardiac emergency that required hospitalization.
He knew what they could mean.
"Get your hands off him!" the son shouted.
The sergeant stepped between them.
"Another step and you're under arrest too!"
The younger man stared.
"My father needs medical help!"
"He's resisting arrest."
"He's seventy-eight years old!"
The sergeant's jaw tightened.
"Age doesn't put anybody above the law."
The son looked past him.
His father was now crouched against the patrol SUV, breathing rapidly.
He seemed unable to lift his head.
The son reached for his phone.
The sergeant pointed sharply.
"Put that away!"
The younger man stopped.
Then looked directly into the officer's eyes.
"No."
The sergeant took one threatening step forward.
"Excuse me?"
The son raised his phone.
"I want you to look at something."
The sergeant laughed.
"I don't have time for your little videos."
The son tapped the screen.
A recording appeared.
It showed the same driveway.
The same gray pickup truck.
And the same black patrol SUV.
The timestamp was eleven minutes earlier.
The sergeant's smile began fading.
The son turned the screen toward him.
"That's you, isn't it?"
On the video, the uniformed officer walked toward the pickup truck while the elderly homeowner was still inside the house.
He glanced toward the porch.
Then opened the driver's door, which the father had left unlocked after unloading garden supplies.
The officer reached into his uniform pocket.
Removed a small blue evidence pouch.
And slipped it beneath the pickup's front seat.
The footage was unmistakable.
The sergeant stared.
The son took a step closer.
