He brought several old photographs.
Described how the subdivision had changed.
And showed a copy of the original Mill Creek drainage map.
The event was ordinary.
Families attended.
Retired residents told stories.
And volunteers displayed artifacts collected from local households.
Among the items was an antique silver pocket watch belonging to a prominent county family.
The watch had been loaned for the display by someone associated with the development company.
Three days later, a report claimed that the watch was missing.
The elderly homeowner was identified as someone who had been near the display.
That fact was true.
He'd admired the watch while speaking with a volunteer.
But there was no reliable evidence that he'd taken it.
The report did not establish theft.
Nor did it justify treating him as guilty.
The developer's associate didn't care.
He wanted an allegation that could be used to pressure the family.
And he wanted the sergeant to make sure something incriminating appeared in the gray pickup.
The sergeant arrived at the sales center wearing civilian clothes.
He sat across from the developer's associate.
The man placed a small cobalt-blue pouch on the desk.
Inside was the pocket watch.
The sergeant stared.
"Where did you get that?"
The associate smiled.
"It was recovered."
"Recovered where?"
"That's not important."
The sergeant looked up.
"Actually, it is."
The associate's smile faded.
For several seconds, the room was silent.
Then he leaned forward.
"The homeowner has been causing difficulties."
The sergeant remained still.
The man continued.
"There's a theft complaint. You know how to investigate one."
The sergeant looked toward the pouch.
He understood what was being suggested.
If the pocket watch appeared inside the elderly man's truck, the sergeant could claim it was evidence connected to the report.
He might then attempt an arrest and use the situation to gain access to documents the developer wanted.
But the sergeant also knew that placing evidence inside somebody's vehicle would be illegal.
He looked toward the associate.
"I'm not doing that."
The man studied him.
Then smiled.
"Nobody's asking you to do anything inappropriate."
He pushed the pouch closer.
"We're asking you to help resolve a problem."
The sergeant didn't touch it.
The associate continued.
"The sheriff knows this matter needs attention."
The officer looked up.
"Does he?"
"Of course."
The man paused.
"And the developer remembers who supports this community."
The sergeant understood the implication.
