The shuttle had been approaching the intersection from a side road.

Its front camera captured part of the traffic.

A second camera recorded a wider view toward the adjacent lanes.

The footage wasn't perfect.

Snow and road spray reduced visibility.

But several important movements were clear.

A dark SUV approached the intersection at a speed that appeared higher than surrounding traffic.

It moved abruptly across the lane occupied by Hannah's vehicle.

There was visible contact between the two vehicles before Hannah's car changed direction.

The SUV continued away from the scene.

The recording did not identify the driver.

But it challenged the conclusion that Hannah's initial loss of control was simply an unexplained response to icy conditions.

I sat motionless.

For three years, people had told me Hannah had made a driving mistake.

Friends reassured me that accidents happened.

Insurance representatives explained that winter roads were dangerous.

Even I had sometimes wondered whether she was tired or distracted.

Now there was evidence another vehicle had struck hers first.

I looked toward the investigator.

β€œSo she didn't just lose control.”

He answered carefully.

β€œThe footage shows an external event preceding her vehicle's change in direction. The full reconstruction is still underway.”

I nodded.

Then asked, β€œCan you identify the SUV?”

Sloane opened another file.

β€œThat's what we're working on.”

The vehicle had a distinctive rear-light configuration and visible damage near one corner after the impact.

The image quality wasn't sufficient to read a plate with confidence.

But investigators were comparing it with vehicle registration, repair, insurance, and other records from the relevant period.

I sat back.

For the first time, I felt some relief.

Not because Hannah was coming home.

She wasn't.

Not because a new investigation could erase what Ava had suffered.

It couldn't.

But because the story we'd been told was no longer the only story.

After the meeting, I went directly to the cemetery.

The snow had melted around Hannah's headstone.

I knelt beside it.

For several minutes, I didn't speak.

Then I placed my hand against the cold stone.

β€œI'm sorry.”

The words surprised me.

I hadn't planned to say them.

But once they came, I couldn't stop.

β€œI'm sorry I believed the report without asking whether there was more.”

Tears filled my eyes.

β€œI'm sorry I spent so much time wondering whether you made a mistake.”

The wind moved through the bare trees.
