I looked toward her name.
Then whispered, βYou were trying to bring our girl home.β
I began crying.
For a long time, I remained there.
Finally, I stood.
Brushed the snow from my jeans.
And returned to my truck.
When I reached the garage, Kelly was waiting outside.
She held two cups of coffee.
One black.
One with cream.
I stopped.
She smiled faintly.
βI didn't know whether you'd eaten.β
I shook my head.
βNo.β
She handed me the black coffee.
Then studied my face.
βHow did it go?β
I took a breath.
βThey found the video.β
Her expression changed.
I continued.
βAnother car hit Hannah before she went off the road.β
Kelly closed her eyes.
For a moment, she didn't speak.
Then she whispered, βI remember the dark car.β
My heart tightened.
But I didn't press her.
Instead, I told her what the investigators had established.
She listened quietly.
Then looked toward the garage.
βThat's why I came here.β
I frowned.
βWhat?β
Her eyes filled.
βNot just today.β
She took a slow breath.
βThe afternoon I disappeared.β
I stared.
Kelly continued.
βA man came into the flower shop before the rack fell.β
My attention sharpened.
βHe was ordering flowers for a private business event.β
She looked toward the pavement.
βI couldn't remember where I'd seen him. But when he spoke, I felt frightened.β
I remained silent.
She continued.
βThen the delivery rack crashed behind me, and I remembered a dark vehicle. Snow. Somebody yelling.β
Her fingers tightened around the coffee cup.
βI didn't know whether the memories belonged together.β
I nodded.
Kelly looked up.
βBut I thought the man might have something to do with them.β
βDid you tell Detective Sloane?β
βNot yet. I wasn't sure it mattered.β
I took a breath.
βIt might. You can tell her what you recall without trying to decide what it means.β
Kelly nodded.
βI will.β
Then she looked toward me.
βI didn't come to your attic because I planned to involve you in this.β
I smiled faintly.
βI know.β
She continued.
βI came because I trusted you.β
For a long moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I nodded.
βI'm glad you did.β
She smiled sadly.
βSo am I.β
But later that evening, Kelly called with news that made the entire situation feel different.
She had found the flower shop's appointment record from the afternoon she disappeared.
