Then Kelly whispered, βI know I scared you.β
Diane began crying again.
Kelly swallowed.
βI'm sorry.β
Tom opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
His daughter was looking directly at him.
Not confused.
Not childish.
Simply exhausted.
βI need you to listen before asking me twenty more questions.β
Tom slowly nodded.
βAll right.β
Kelly took a breath.
βI didn't run away because I don't love you.β
Her mother's face crumpled.
βI love you too, sweetheart.β
Kelly continued.
βBut sometimes being watched every minute makes me feel like I'll never be allowed to have a normal life again.β
Tom looked away.
She swallowed.
βI know I made a mistake. I should've called. I know that.β
Then she looked toward Kenneth.
βI'll answer the questions you need for the report.β
The officer nodded.
βAnd I'd like to check in with my own doctor afterward,β she added.
I felt a little relief.
She was making decisions.
Practical ones.
Her own.
Diane looked toward me.
βCan she stay here while we arrange that?β
Before I answered, Kelly spoke.
βMom, please ask me.β
The room became quiet.
Diane stared at her daughter.
Then nodded slowly.
βKelly, would you like to stay with Jeffrey for a little while?β
Kelly looked toward me.
Then smiled faintly.
βYes.β
I nodded.
βWe can make a temporary arrangement that works for everybody.β
But the thing I remember most from that afternoon wasn't the police report or the conversation with her parents.
It was something Kelly did a few minutes later.
She entered my kitchen.
Saw a vase of drooping hydrangeas beside the sink.
And immediately began rescuing them.
She emptied the cloudy water, carefully trimmed the stems, cleaned the vase, and arranged the flowers as though the entire world had narrowed to something she understood perfectly.
Her hands were steady.
Her expression peaceful.
And when my daughter Ava returned home that evening, Kelly looked up from the flowers and smiled.
Ava froze in the doorway.
Then shouted, βKELLY!β
She ran forward.
Kelly opened her arms.
Ava threw herself into them.
And while my daughter hugged the young woman everybody had been searching for, I noticed something strange.
Kelly was staring at Ava's hair.
At the little silver clips shaped like horses.
Her smile faded.
For a fraction of a second, she looked terrified.
Then she whispered something I didn't understand.
βA little horse.β
I frowned.
βWhat?β
