Elena never described Red Basin in dramatic language.

That frustrated investigators at first. People expected trauma to come out in broken sentences or vivid detail. Elena gave them timestamps. Directional notes. Signal failures. Names. Orders. The exact point where the lead vehicle stopped responding. The exact moment Staff Sergeant Holt shouted for smoke cover. The exact second she realized the attack was coming from positions already waiting for them.

She did not talk about screams unless asked.

She did not talk about blood unless forced.

She talked about the route.

Because the route was the crime.

Echo Squad had not been surprised by random hostile movement. They had been led into a position where someone knew they would be, knew when their signal would drop, and knew which vehicle carried the black signal case. The attackers did not waste time searching. They went straight for the rear compartment where the engineers had stored the recovered equipment.

That was not luck.

That was targeting.

Elena crawled under the damaged side of the lead vehicle after the first minute of chaos. Her left ear rang so badly she could not hear her own breathing. She found Tomas Vail pinned near the rear tire, still conscious, eyes full of dust.

“Adam changed it,” he said.

Elena moved closer. “What?”

“The route. I saw his tablet.”

Then he grabbed her sleeve with a strength that frightened her.

“He sent them.”

She thought he meant sent the squad.

Only later did she understand.

He meant sent the attackers.

Elena tried to transmit, but the primary channel was dead. The secondary channel flickered in and out, enough to record fragments but not enough for clean contact. She switched to local capture and held the tablet near her chest while she moved, letting it record whatever it could.

Staff Sergeant Holt ordered her to get the black case away from the vehicles.

That was the official mission priority.

Elena refused at first.

There were people still alive.

Holt grabbed her vest.

“Take it,” he said. “If they get it, this was for nothing.”

She did not know what he meant.

She took the case because he ordered her to.

She moved through dust, shouting for Nina, June, Park, anyone. She found Nina unconscious but breathing near a ditch and dragged her behind a rock shelf. That was why Nina survived. Elena never brought it up because it sounded too much like asking for credit.

At 15:03, Adam’s voice came through the comms.

Not panicked.

Not broken.

Clear.

“Echo element compromised. Marlow initiated unauthorized signal burst and revealed position.”

Elena stared at the tablet.

She had not sent any burst.

She had been trying to get through after the ambush began.

Adam was already writing the story while the squad was still dying.

That was the moment Elena understood survival might not be enough.

She would have to fight the report too.
