Elena’s first mistake was believing the truth would rise naturally because it was true.

Her second was assuming the military system would recognize Adam’s report as too fast, too clean, and too convenient. It did not. Systems are built by people, and people under pressure often prefer the version that arrives formatted correctly. Adam’s report had names, times, acronyms, and a neat explanation for disaster. Elena had injuries, grief, a corrupted recording, and the burden of being alive when better-liked soldiers were not.

For the first five days, she was not accused.

She was “under review.”

That phrase followed her everywhere.

Under review meant people could stop inviting her to sit. Under review meant friends lowered their voices when she entered a room. Under review meant officers could ask questions that sounded neutral but cut like accusation. Under review meant Adam could tell just enough of his version to poison the unit while pretending to respect procedure.

Nina Hayes was the only one who kept sitting near her.

Even Nina struggled at first.

“I don’t remember the route change,” Nina admitted.

Elena nodded. “I know.”

“I remember you pulling me.”

Elena looked down.

“I remember dust. And Holt yelling. And someone saying the case mattered.” Nina’s eyes filled with frustration. “I don’t remember Adam.”

“That’s why he’s doing this.”

Nina understood.

Not fully.

Enough.

The black case became the center of the quiet fight. Officially, it contained damaged relay components from the Red Basin station. Unofficially, Elena had begun to suspect it contained something Adam wanted recovered but not examined. After Holt ordered her to carry it out, she noticed the case had two tracking seals. One matched the recovery manifest. The other did not.

She photographed both before handing it over.

That was the first thing she did right.

The second was keeping her corrupted comm tablet.

A technical sergeant in medical had told her to surrender all mission devices. Elena said hers had already been collected. That was not true. It was under a folded blanket in her gear bag, cracked at the corner but still working enough to preserve local files.

She did not know whom to trust.

Then, on the sixth day, a message appeared on her personal device from an unknown number.

Do not confront Rusk. Eat in the mess hall as usual. We are watching him.

Elena stared at it for a long time.

The sender included one authentication phrase:

Holt said the case mattered.

Only someone with access to her sealed statement would know that.

Elena replied with two words.

Who are you?

The answer came three minutes later.

Bellamy.

That was when she realized the investigation had moved above Adam’s reach.

And that someone expected him to try something public.
