Adam was not detained in the mess hall.
That surprised some people.
Bellamy had the authority to remove him immediately, but he chose a different move. He ordered Adam escorted to his quarters under restriction and placed two MPs outside the door. Adam was told not to contact witnesses, not to access mission files, and not to speak to anyone connected to Red Basin without counsel present.
Adam laughed when he heard that.
“Sir, am I under arrest?”
Bellamy looked at him.
“No. You are under observation.”
Adam’s smile vanished.
Observation was worse, in a way. Arrest gives a man a line to fight. Observation tells him the line has already moved around him. It told Adam that Bellamy had not finished watching.
Elena was taken to medical first. The food had soaked through her uniform. Her hip was bruised from the fall. Her wrist was sore from catching herself. The medic asked whether she wanted to report the assault separately.
Elena looked at Bellamy’s aide.
“It is not separate.”
That answer became part of the case.
Because Adam had not humiliated Elena out of spontaneous hatred. He had done it in front of witnesses, after days of rumors, after a mission report blaming her for deaths, after knowing she was the surviving voice that could challenge his version. The mess hall assault was not a personal outburst. It was witness intimidation.
CID reopened the Red Basin timeline that night.
The first thing they pulled was the route approval. The document showed a command override, but the digital signature did not match the officer listed. The approval had been routed through Adam’s operations tablet, then reclassified as a field update. Someone had used a temporary credential to make the change look like it came from above him.
The second thing they examined was the comm failure notice.
It had been scheduled.
Not triggered.
The system had been told to expect signal loss before Echo Squad reached the lower wash. That meant the dead zone was not simply known. It had been built into the plan.
The third thing was the black case.
When the evidence team scanned the second tracking seal, it did not connect to relay station equipment. It connected to a sealed internal inquiry involving missing guidance chips, contractor transport fraud, and unauthorized sale of restricted components through a private defense supplier.
The black case was not the mission.
It was evidence from another mission.
Echo Squad had been sent to recover it before Adam’s network could move it.
Or so Bellamy believed.
The problem was that someone had known they were coming.
At 02:13, CID recovered a deleted message from Adam’s tablet cache.
If Marlow walks out with the case, make her the reason.
The recipient was still unknown.
But the meaning was not.
Elena had not become the scapegoat after Red Basin.
She had been selected before she survived it.
