“Over coffee?”

The Air Marshal’s face hardened.

“No.”

“Over assault.”

“It was an accident.”

Several passengers protested immediately.

“No, it wasn’t.”

“He poured it.”

“I filmed it.”

The woman across the aisle raised her phone.

“So did I.”

The billionaire looked around.

His confidence flickered.

Then returned.

“You people have no idea what you’re doing.”

The Air Marshal said:

“Stand up.”

“I’m already standing.”

“Hands visible.”

“They are visible.”

“Keep them that way.”

The billionaire lifted his hands mockingly.

“Happy?”

The Air Marshal did not answer.

His attention shifted.

He looked toward the Black woman.

At first only briefly.

Then again.

Longer.

Something changed in his face.

Recognition.

His eyes narrowed.

He looked at her hair.

Her face.

The diamond earrings.

Then her eyes.

The woman noticed.

For the first time since the assault, her expression changed too.

Not surprise.

Recognition in return.

The Air Marshal whispered:

“Ma’am?”

The billionaire frowned.

“What?”

The woman gave the Air Marshal a tiny shake of her head.

Not yet.

He understood.

But now his jaw was tight enough that a muscle moved near his cheek.

The billionaire noticed.

“You know her?”

The Air Marshal looked at him.

“Yes.”

The answer was flat.

The billionaire laughed uncertainly.

“Who is she?”

The Air Marshal said:

“Right now, she is the passenger you assaulted.”

The Black woman looked toward him.

Approval.

The Air Marshal continued:

“That is enough.”

The billionaire’s mouth tightened.

“I want the captain.”

The flight attendant answered:

“The captain has already been informed.”

“Good.”

“I want him out here.”

“He cannot leave the flight deck because you demand it.”

The billionaire pointed toward the Black woman.

“Then remove her.”

Every person close enough to hear seemed to inhale at once.

The Air Marshal asked:

“Why would she be removed?”

“Because she created this situation.”

The Black woman actually laughed.

Softly.

The first laugh anyone had heard from her.

The billionaire looked toward her.

“What’s funny?”

She met his gaze.

“You.”

His face darkened.

The Air Marshal stepped between them slightly.

“Sir, stop speaking to her.”

The billionaire pointed at him.
